SUMMARY:Lawless Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Martha Paynter in conversation with Dr. Lianne Yoshida and Nasha Nijhawan for the launch of Lawless: Abortion Under Complete Decriminalization  \nDr. Martha Paynter has worked to advance abortion access in Canada for over twenty years. A writer\, nurse and public scholar\, she is recognized internationally for her expertise at the nexus of reproductive justice and prisoner health. She is an associate professor at the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Nursing\, where her research addresses the health rights of people experiencing incarceration\, as well as sexual and reproductive health care in Canada and around the world. She is the author of Abortion to Abolition: Reproductive Health and Justice in Canada (Fernwood\, 2017) and has published extensively in national magazines (Chatelaine\, Briarpatch) and scientific journals. Paynter is a keen advocate for increasing the influence of women and gender-diverse people in news media and participates regularly in interviews with national and international print\, radio and TV press (CBC/Radio-Canada\, Global\, CTV). She values and fosters collaborations with community organizations and lived-experience experts in reproductive health and prison justice. Paynter is a recipient of the 150th anniversary medal from the Senate of Canada for her volunteer service to the country (2017) and the King Charles III Coronation Medal for service to the nursing profession (2025). \nAbout Lawless \nCanada is the only country with complete decriminalization of abortion: no gestational duration limitations\, no parental consent obligations\, and no waiting periods. In recent years\, other countries (New Zealand\, Colombia\, Uruguay\, Mexico) have made strides toward this\, while the United States has notoriously lost ground. Amidst the tumult\, nurse and scholar Martha Paynter uses historical context and contemporary issues to explain why experts advocate against laws governing abortion. \nDespite decriminalization\, Canadian federal and provincial legislation and regulations about health funding\, delivery\, and human rights all shape how abortion care is delivered. Barriers persist in uneven access\, unclear information\, and belief-based denial of care. In accessible plain language from the expansive perspective of a clinician\, researcher and activist\, Paynter describes abortion policy\, practice and experience and discusses how to resolve challenges that continue more than three decades after Canada became the world’s most legally progressive jurisdiction for abortion.

SUMMARY:Bad Artist Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of Bad Artist\, edited by Nellwyn Lampert\, Pamela Oakley\, Christian Smith\, and Gillian Turnbull. In conversation with Stephanie Domet. \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nIn a world that worships productivity\, creating for art’s sake is seen as romantic and nearly indefensible. For anyone who has ever struggled to honour their artistic impulses\, Bad Artist offers an antidote to this toxic productivity narrative. This collection of essays features 21 Canadian and international writers from a breadth of backgrounds and experiences whose lives are not always proscribed by predictable work schedules or reliable support systems. They fit creating into the cracks of their lives\, and through their stories show us all how to keep creating—not producing. \nAs artists\, many of whom have faced systemic barriers\, the collection’s contributors offer pragmatic reflections on resisting the culture of productivity\, reminding us that creativity can take many forms. Taken together\, the essays present a comprehensive rumination on creativity in late capitalism\, providing warmth\, support\, comradery\, and empathy.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: The Summer Between Us by Andre Fenton
DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 27th from 7-9pm for the book launch of Andre Fenton’s latest novel\, The Summer Between Us. \nThis coming-of-age story follows eighteen-year-old Adrian Carter as he graduates from high school and confronts difficult decisions about his future\, all while dealing with the stress and pressure he feels to please those closest to him. As Adrian navigates the emotional highs and lows of the summer between graduation and the post-secondary future\, he negotiates the difficulties of forging a path in life against others’ expectations. \nDespite his wish to follow his long time girlfriend Mel on her cross-country trip with her band\, Adrian is hesitant about spending too much time in the punk’s scenes majority-white spaces. Adrian struggles with these feelings and works to find common ground with his emotionally distant father. Meanwhile he starts to understand that his own passion is grounded in a desire to support a community he’s forged on his own. \nDealing with important themes (a desire for independence\, identity\, first love\, familial tensions) from the nuanced perspective of a biracial teen\, this story tackles key contemporary social issues. Class differences\, colourism in the Black community and the structural barriers limiting access to post-secondary education for Black youth are all embedded in Andre Fenton’s readable narrative. \nAndre Fenton is an award-winning young adult author\, spoken word artist\, and arts educator. He has written two previous novels\, Worthy of Love and ANNAKA. Andre’s work focuses on race\, self-esteem and creating more representation and diversity in young adult fiction. \nThe evening will in conversation with Andre Fenton along with award-winning middle grade author\, Chad Lucas as they discuss some of the topics in the book: Masculinity\, eating disorders\, diversity in fiction\, and much more. \nWe recommend that guests wear masks for this event.

SUMMARY:Abortion to Abolition Book Launch and Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the in-person book launch and art opening for Abortion to Abolition by Martha Paynter\, illustrated by Julia Hutt. \n  \nAbout the book – https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/abortion-to-abolition \nThe history of abortion decriminalization and critical advocacy efforts to improve access in Canada deserve to be better known. Ordinary people persevered to make Canada the most progressive country in the world with respect to abortion care. But while abortion access is poorly understood\, so too are the persistent threats to reproductive justice in this country: sexual violence\, gun violence\, homophobia and transphobia\, criminalization of sex work\, reproductive oppression of Indigenous women and girls\, privatization of fertility health services\, and the racism and colonialism of policing and the prison system. This beautifully illustrated book tells the empowering true stories behind the struggles for reproductive justice in Canada\, celebrating past wins and revealing how prison abolitionism is key to the path forward. \n  \nAbout the author \nMartha Paynter is a registered nurse providing abortion and postpartum care in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. The founder and chair of Wellness Within: An Organization for Health and Justice\, and a doctoral candidate at the Dalhousie University School of Nursing\, Martha has 20 years of experience working to advance gender health equity. Her practice\, teaching and research focus on the intersection of reproductive health and the justice system. A frequent contributor to Briarpatch\, CBC\, the Coast\, the Conversation\, the Halifax Examiner\, and Saltwire\, Martha writes about publicly-funded health care\, prison abolition\, and gender equity. \n  \nAbout the artist \nJulia Hutt is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist residing in Kjipuktuk. Inspired by her own experience with pregnancy\, birthing and baby-raising\, Julia works with both traditional and digital illustration to create anecdotal scenes that portray snapshots of early parenthood. Her work challenges the capitalist devaluation of child rearing and traditionally gendered work. She produces work with Wellness Within and Martha Paynter to raise awareness about reproductive justice in the Canadian prison system.
