SUMMARY:StArt Festival Workshops
DESCRIPTION:StART Workshops\, June 12th 2022\, 12pm-5pm \nEvent and Stage Lighting\, 12 pm – 3 pm:  \nAn introduction to the basics of stage lighting for theatre and live events.  Learn how to light your events and communicate ideas with your designers/technicians.  See how light can be used to transform a space\, set the mood\, or help tell your story! This workshop will be instructed by The Bus Stop Theatre’s very own Technical Director Matt Downey and Assistant Technical Director Amelia George! \nMatt Downey is the Technical Director of The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op. Originally from St John’s Newfoundland\, they have been working for The Bus Stop in multiple capacities for 10 years. Outside (and inside) the Bus Stop they are a lighting and set designer and queer theatre and circus artist\, working with companies such as The Villians Theatre\, Xara Choral Theatre\, Halifax Pride\, Workshirt Operahouse\, Halifax Fringe\, Halifax Summer Opera and Mayworks. \nAmelia graduated from Acadia University’s Theatre Production program in 2019 with a concentration in projection/video design. That being said\, she can often be found doing a little bit of everything from lighting\, to set and prop construction\, costumes\, stage management\, painting\, and whatever needs doing in-between. \nBreaking Barriers\, 3 pm – 4 pm:  \nBayan (Bay) Younis (she/her) is an immigrant of colour living in Kjiputkuk\, Mi’kma’ki. Breakdancing for the last 6 years\, Bayan leads the Breaking Barriers sessions\, a safe space for the underrepresented community to learn how to breakdance. Bayan takes an informed teaching approach\, acknowledging the roots breaking has within black culture. Ensuring everyone feels included\, seen\, and welcomed. \nThis beginner level workshop will cover history\, foundation\, style and primary elements of breaking. \nSongwriting with MAJE\, 4 pm – 5 pm:  \nMAJE is a hip hop artist/entrepreneur from East Preston. In 2015 he was the winner of the Viola Desmond Songwriting competition $10\,000 prize. He followed that up with numerous nominations from Music Nova Awards\, ECMAs and The Best In Halifax (The Coast) as well as his award winning Short Film “Outhome”. In 2019 he won another monetary award but this time it was $20\,000 Artist In Residence award through MNS and Casino Nova Scotia. He is currently creating more Songwriting Workshops with his business called Gold Mind accompanied by The Gold Mind Scholarship through NSCC. \nDuring this workshop we will be looking at the many different approaches to creative writing. Playing with remixes\, and beats provided by Jordan (Tempo) Farmer. \nAll workshops are free to attend\, however we will be accepting donations to help fund future BSTC programming. \nAddress: 2203 Gottingen St\, Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Canada B3K 3B5 \nTime: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
