DESCRIPTION:On the Line is a time-lapse video and photo compilation of six months’ worth of one of domestic labor’s most repetitive and relentless tasks: laundry. SUMMARY:Mayworks presents Found in Translation/Trouvé dans la traduction
DESCRIPTION:Found in Translation is an interactive performance in which small objects are translated into movement\, drawing\, and poetry through a series of playful transformations. Audience members are invited to join with performers to uncover illuminating potentials in the things that surround us. \nFound in Translation originated as part of Eastern Front Theatre’s Macro Digitals: CONNECTIONS under the guidance of Kat McCormack\, with collaborators Katie Clarke\, Breton Lalama\, Logan Robins\, Gillian Seaward-Boone and Rebecca Wolfe. \nFound in Translation is an interactive performance that transforms small objects into movement\, drawing\, and poetry through a kind of artistic “assembly line.” Six performers take part at a time\, rotating through all of the roles: hosting\, describing\, drawing\, dancing\, typing poems\, and reading them aloud. Crucially\, the “machine” is always activated by audience participation. An audience member begins each round by arranging objects\, and at the end of the cycle\, they receive the poem that was generated and read out specifically for them – an artistic “gift” created through the collective process.

SUMMARY:Mayworks presents Be Eternal
DESCRIPTION:Taking its name from the final line of Common’s acclaimed 2005 album\, Be Eternal explores black male mortality\, particularly of musicians\, and the normalization of this in modern society. Led by local saxophonist Jackson Fairfax-Perry\, this ensemble brings together 5 local improvising musicians with roots connecting to the African diaspora. Exploring both spontaneous and written compositions\, Be Eternal asks how can we move past this mindset that black men die young? That this is just how it is? How can we honour the artists who came before us\, while also giving flowers to the ones who are still with us? This music is raw and mournful\, but it is also filled with joy and hope\, brimming with the power of our ancestors. This is a celebration of our black musical lineage. \nPersonnel:\nJackson Fairfax-Perry – Saxophones \nAndrew Jackson – Trombone \nLance Sampson – Voice \nShuvanjan Karmakar – Bass \nJoshua Awe – Drums \n  \n$10 in advance and $15 at the door.\n**Ticket includes admission to AND SO WE DANCE**

SUMMARY:Nova Scotia Retro Film Festo: The Corridor
DESCRIPTION:Evan Kelly | Canada | 2010 | 98m \nThis film is screening as part of the second annual Nova Scotia Retro Film Festo\, happening January 29 – February 2\, 2026! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvan Kelly (director\, The Corridor) has been making short films\, television\, documentary projects\, and countless commercials since 1999. Like so many others\, the draw had always been towards feature films. If he were a pony (which he is not)\, The Corridor – essentially – could be described as his one (true) trick. It was a trick that showed at festivals around the world\, and gathered some acclaim and appreciators along the way. \nJosh MacDonald (writer\, The Corridor) is the winner of an AMD/Dell “Next Wave” Award for Best Screenplay from Fantastic Fest in Austin\, TX\, for The Corridor. He is also the writer of the feature comedy-drama Faith\, Fraud & Minimum Wage. Josh’s stage plays #IAmTheCheese (based on Robert Cormier’s YA novel)\, The Mystery Play\, Whereveville and Halo are published by Talonbooks. Josh also teaches screenwriting at NSCAD University. \nCraig Cameron (producer\, The Corridor) is a seasoned filmmaker based in Halifax\, with over two decades of experience in the film and television industry. His extensive experience spans various roles such as a producer\, assistant director\, and production manager on both local and international productions. Craig’s career has been anchored at Chronicle Pictures\, where he has been involved in several notable projects\, including “Terminal Lunch\,” “December 1917” (Gemini nominated)\, and “Touch and Go\,” written by Michael Melski. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTyler Crawley needs his friends’ support more than ever. He plans a weekend with his childhood buddies to reconnect\, to renew the old friendship that seems to have deteriorated over time. The bond between his buddies has cooled over the years\, and their ability to understand each other has diminished. Tyler’s convinced if he spends a few days with them out in the woods\, partying and having fun\, things will go back to the way they were. He’s wrong. There’s something out there\, waiting for them. \n“(A) fantastic thrill ride of horror and science fiction.” – Adrian Halen\, HorrorNews.Net \nWinner: Best Film – Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival\, 2011Winner: Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature Film — Fantasia Fest\, 2011Winner: AMD/Dell “Next Wave” Award for Best Screenplay — Fantastic Fest\, Austin\, TX\, 2011Winner: Best Picture & Best Director — Fantastic Planet\, Australia\, 2012Winner: Best Picture — 2011 Flickers Rhode Island Int’l Film FestivalWinner: Best Independent Film — Dark Bridges Film Festival\, Sask.\, 2011Winner: People’s Choice Award\, Best of 2011 – Canuxploitation.comNominated for Three Awards at the Tulsa Int’l Film Fest\, including Best Picture (Foreign). SUMMARY:Mayworks
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Mayworks Festival of Working People & the Arts is packed with events to fuel you up with energy\, connection\, and critical reflections that will help carve a path toward a better world! \nThe festival kicks off on May Day with the hosts of Sandy & Nora Talk Politics recording their top charting podcast before a live audience. They will be accompanied by live music performed by Palestinian-Canadian pianist John Kameel Farah. \nHot on the heels of the festival opener is an all-star hip hop concert featuring Wiki\, an icon of New York’s City’s rap underground. He’ll be sharing the stage with Brooklyn’s Lord Unknown and local legends DJ Uncle Fester and Tachichi. \nWe’re partnering with the Atlantic International Film Festival for a one-night only screening of “Union” – the Sundance winner that documents the first successful union drive at a US-based Amazon facility. \nXOSECRET presents a VR experience that takes participants through a cautionary fable that imagines Nova Scotia surrounded by rising seas resulting from climate change. \nNoella Murphy‘s solo play “Flower Bed” uses humour and puppets to tell an autobiographical account of how it feels to be taken out of the “productive workforce” as a result of chronic illness. Meanwhile\, Sara Coffin‘s movement choreography “Archive of Loneliness” is set to voice-messages left by a long-term care resident isolated during COVID-19. \nMayworks is no stranger to diversity with a film program composed entirely of shorts by Indigenous women in addition to a showcase of Black animators presented in partnership with AFX. In collaboration with Live Art Dance\, Mayworks also zooms out for a wider look at human relations with “Altération” presented by Kira Arts. \nFinally\, Mayworks reprises its popular Working Class Heritage Tours of downtown Halifax\, which this year will be made all the more visible by an accompanying quilted banner crafted by artists Sarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko. \nThe world may look bleak\, but there’s no shortage of hope in the many ways we can come together and express ourselves creatively. May Day both celebrates and invokes the coming of a new dawn toward the world we desperately need.\nHappy May Day!
