SUMMARY:Vote for The Bus Stop Theatre in the District 8 Participatory Budget!
DESCRIPTION:the Bus Stop Theatre is one of the community organizations that can be voted for during the District 8 Participatory Budget on Wednesday July 26 from 6-8pm. We need YOU to help us get $10\,000 for important upgrades to the theatre that will provide increased accessibility and functionality.\n \nIf you live in District 8 (north End Halifax/Councillor Lindell Smith): come out to the Halifax Forum and vote between 6 and 8pm on Wednesday\, July 26th. \n\nIf you don’t live in District 8: Spread the word! Tell your friends\, share our social media posts\, encourage Northenders in your life to come!\n\nWhat is the money for? \nGreat question. We’re seeking funds for 4 projects.\nThe first is sound dampening. You might be aware that the lobby is a very resonant space\, and these funds will add baffling that will better separate the two spaces.\n\nThe second is for 360 video conferencing technology. This will be used by staff for meetings as well as provided to renters. This is necessary as meetings are increasingly using a hybrid virtual/in person model.\nThis third is to commission a local artist to paint a mural on our exterior back wall. The new community room is receiving increased use\, and the mural will both beautify the back entrance\, as well as make the entrance more visible from its Maitland Street location.\nFinally\, we will use funds to acquire live streaming equipment. Since lockdown\, and still years after\, live streaming has become an increasingly popular request in the space. We are seeking this equipment to remain responsive to the needs of our membership.

SUMMARY:Bus Stop Theatre Writer's Circle
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP (IT’S FREE):\nhttp://bit.do/writerscircle \nABOUT:\nThe Bus Stop Theatre Writer’s Circle (formerly the Bus Stop Theatre Playwrights Unit) is an open invite writer’s collective. We meet monthly to share writing and feedback. We aim to create an affirming\, nurturing space to support the vulnerable practice of sharing new writing. Join us once or come every month – we just ask that you sign up in advance because capacity is limited.\n\nTo date we have been a theatre/playwright focused group\, and that’s where most of our expertise is. We value cross-pollination and we invite writers from other disciplines to join us! Whether you want to dip your toes into playwriting or you want to get feedback on your poetry/screenplay/short story\, we’d love to have you.\n\nWe have resources to support artists working towards professional productions\, but we welcome all writers\, whether you identify as “professional” or not.\n\nThe BST Writer’s Circle is organized by producer Meg Hubley and coordinator Karen Gross.\n\nHOW IT WORKS:\nWe meet on the third Sunday of every month.\n\nAfter you sign up\, we’ll confirm your spot (and send you the Zoom link) a week before the session. We have space for ten people who want to share work plus five people who just want to listen and give feedback.\n\nSessions are about two hours long with a break halfway through and ten minutes per writer to share writing and hear feedback. We go over the details of how sessions run every time\, so don’t worry if it’s your first time joining us! You’re also welcome to email writerscircle@thebusstoptheatre.org with any questions.\n\nWe suggest bringing a maximum of two pages of writing to allow enough time for responses. Writers are encouraged to come to the session with a specific question or issue they’re working on and want feedback about. The facilitator can also offer reflection questions to the group.\n\nThis is a reciprocal exchange: sharing your feedback is as important as sharing your work.\n\nIf you’re new to the Writer’s Circle and you want to get a feel for the group before you share your writing\, or if you just don’t have work to share this month\, you’re welcome to attend as a listener.\n\nLogo by Colleen MacIsaac.

SUMMARY:BoxWhatBox: Alternative Acting for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:BoxWhatBox: Alternative acting for the 21st century \nBoxWhatBox is a system of performance creation and actor training devised by Michael Devine\, a Canadian theatre artist who has created and directed productions in more than 20 countries\, at national theatres\, international theatre festivals\, and as site specific installations. In BoxWhatBox actors learn how to organize and use what they already know: the four expressive vocabularies of voice\, verbal and non-verbal\, and of posture and gesture. They learn how to identify and discard what holds them back: habits of mind and body. BoxWhatBox actors perform interculturally: across different cultures and genres\, from established plays to original material. \nThis will be a 4 hour workshop followed by a dinner and discussion.\n$50 per person or $40 for BSTC Members**. Limited space available! \nTo register please email terra.novella.theatre@gmail.com. Please include any food allergies\, etc. and we will be happy to accommodate. \n**We never want price to be the reason you don’t take a workshop. If price is a problem\, please let us know and we would be happy to work something out.

SUMMARY:From the Stage to the Page: Graphic Design for Theatre
DESCRIPTION:From the Stage to the Page: Graphic Design for Theatre \nColleen MacIsaac \nFriday September 8\, 10am \nThe Bus Stop Theatre \nOftentimes an audience’s first interaction with a play will be through its poster. How do we as theatre artists make sure that this crucial first point-of-contact is something that represents the play in an appropriate\, intriguing\, and enticing way? Award-winning multi-disciplinary artist Colleen MacIsaac has designed posters for many local companies including Zuppa Theatre Co\, secret theatre\, LunaSea\, 2b theatre company\, DaPoPo\, as well as many of her own productions. She will examine poster creation from the perspective of a director trying to find a common language with a graphic designer\, offering insight on how to approach that relationship in a way that will allow for the director’s vision to clearly resonate in the design. She will also speak to theatre-makers interested in creating their own posters\, providing design tips and secrets for amateur and emerging designers in their own right. \nLength: 4 Hours \nPrice: $20

SUMMARY:Laban Method Movement Analysis (for Actors)
DESCRIPTION:Laban Method Movement Analysis (for Actors) \nwith Kathryn Reeves \nThursday September 7\, 10am \nThe Bus Stop Theatre \nA system of movements to aid actors in getting into a character using their physicality\, asking artists to go through and explore in the 8 different effort actions. Artists need to come with a monologue prepared. It is highly physical\, and highly rewarding. \nLaban Movement Analysis was developed by Rudolf Laban (1879-1958).  Laban was a scientist\, teacher\, artist\, social activist\, visionary\, and a creator.  Combined with Irmgard Bartenieff’s (1890 – 1981) contributions to the Body category\, the LMA work is a living system that continues to evolve. \nThe Effort actions\, or what Laban sometimes described as dynamics\, is a system for understanding the more subtle characteristics about movement with respect to inner intention. The difference between punching someone in anger and reaching for a glass is slight in terms of body organization – both rely on extension of the arm. The attention to the strength of the movement\, the control of the movement and the timing of the movement are very different. \nEffort has four subcategories (Effort factors)\, each of which has two opposite polarities (Effort elements). \nLength: 4 hours \nPrice: $40 \nNOTES: 15 person limit
