SUMMARY:One Long Table and a Microphone: A Story Telling Party with 2b
DESCRIPTION:On December 7th from 7:00-10:00pm\, Artists and arts community members are invited to an evening of conversation and storytelling with 2b theatre company. \nThis March for the 20th anniversary of the company\, 2b premieres a story about maritime culture\, music\, and its role in the development of two particular Haligonian artists in the early 21st century. This still-untitled piece sees artistic co-directors Anthony Black and Christian Barry on stage together for the first time. Kicking off the company’s anniversary celebrations as part of the production’s development period this December\, 2b shares material from the show\, opens the floor to other creators to share their own work\, and hosts a night of conversation on what it means to be a storyteller in the Maritimes. \nThe evening begins with a Long Table discussion on the topic “Maritime Storytelling and Maritime Storytellers”\, before transitioning into a party and performance cabaret with an Open Mic format. Artists of all experience levels and mediums are encouraged to submit a 5-10 minute performance in any form\, at any stage of development. We’ll round off the evening with Anthony and Christian performing a few songs and stories from the new show. \nThis event is hosted by 2b’s Office & Communications Manager Chelsea Dickie and 2b’s RBC Emerging Artist-in-Residence David Gagnon Walker. Admission is free\, the bar will be open\, and light snacks will be provided! \n_____________________________________________\nAs with each production\, 2b wishes to acknowledge our role as settlers on this land and that this event is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Mi’kmaq territory. Particularly for this production centred around the playwrights’ own relationships to their home\, it is especially important to remember and recognize that we are on stolen land which we are privileged to create and share our work on. \nThe Bus Stop Theatre is located in K’jipuktuk\, which is upheld by The Treaties of Peace and Friendship. These Treaties officially continue to be in effect\, however settlers have repeatedly violated their terms. An immediate example of such is the case of the Alton Gas project\, which you can learn more about here: https://stopaltongas.wordpress.com/ \nThe Bus Stop is also located on Gottingen Street\, which has historically been the home of Black Nova Scotians. We are incredibly grateful to be able to create and present in this space.\n_____________________________________________ \nAbout the Long Table: \nThe Long Table is a performance/conversation hybrid designed to facilitate a non-hierarchical dialogue\, first developed by artist and scholar Lois Weaver as an experiment in participation and public engagement. The Long Table format is a dinner table atmosphere where all voices are encouraged to ask questions\, make statements\, leave comments\, or simply sit\, listen\, and watch. \nAttendees are invited to participate according to their comfort and interest: those who wish to speak sit at the table while those who wish to listen are seated in the spectator chairs along the walls of the room. You can move from or to the table at any time. The hosts will provide an etiquette sheet and starter questions to encourage conversation. \nMore information on the Long Table format here:\nhttp://www.split-britches.com/longtable \nThe Long Table at this event will be centred around the theme “Maritime Storytelling and Maritime Storytellers”. 2b is excited to have Anthony and Christian in the same room to connect and share with other members of our city’s artistic community\, in an open conversation about Halifax’s artistic environment. Bring your thoughts\, your stories\, your questions\, and your friends! \nAbout the Open Mic: \nAlongside Christian and Anthony’s presentation of material from their new show\, 2b is excited to welcome submissions from artists in any medium to present short 5-10 minute pieces in an Open Mic format. We encourage submissions from artists at all levels of experience\, pieces at any stage of development\, and any form that speaks to you. Try something new! Bring back something old! We look forward to a lively night of storytelling\, songs\, and performances. Each participating performance will also be given two comp tickets to 2b’s show premiere in March as a thank you. \nTo submit to the open mic\, simply e-mail Chelsea Dickie at chelsea@2btheatre.com and give us a sense of what you want to do. The only restrictions are that pieces must be 5-10 minutes\, and setup is nothing more than a microphone and a basic stage-lighting wash. The deadline for submissions to the Open Mic is Sunday\, December 1st.
