SUMMARY:A Timed Speed Read of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Trial Transcript with Additional Notes
DESCRIPTION:May 29th to 31st | 7:30pm-9:00pm & June 1st | 2:00pm-3:30pm\nPresented by Surplus Production Unit\nIn 1911\, 146 people were killed in a fire at the factory of the Triangle Waist Company in New York. The highly contentious trial that followed  spurred the public to demand workplace safety reforms and became a touchstone for radical and progressive political movements. At the time\, people swore that the victims and the fire would never be forgotten. \nThree actors – from another country and century – are tasked with reading from the massive trial transcript as quickly as possible. Despite the  speed\, they must communicate the key points and central conflicts\, while giving insight into the 1911 events and their resonance with the world of today. Can they beat their best time? Can they surprise us? Can they help us remember? \nConceived by Alex McLean\nwith (alphabetically) Chun Shing Au\, Zach Faye\, Carmen Lee\, Kat McCormack\, Briony Merritt\, Lily Ross-Millard and Richie Wilcox \nStarring: Kat McCormack\, Briony Merritt and Richie Wilcox \nSet/prop design: Chun Shing Au\, Kai On Kerwin Lam and Carmen Lee\nDirection and Script (from verbatim sources): Alex McLean\nPreliminary Research: Myrto Koumarianos \n**Sign language interpretation will be provided during the May 30th presentation. \n \nTickets and full Festival details available at: www.mayworkshalifax.ca

SUMMARY:The Avengers Tragedy: A Play in a Day
DESCRIPTION:On June 22\, one of The Villain’s Theatre’s most popular traditions is returning in a new form – our summer play-in-a-day! If you’re not familiar with the idea\, this is where we take a script\, get together with a volunteer group of performers\, and within the course of a day we come up with tickle trunk costumes and cardboard props\, and create a script-in-hand-staging which is often ludicrous\, always funny\, and generally a blast for audience and performers alike. \nThe Villains Theatre is pleased to announce that this year’s Play-in-a-Day is a joint FUNDRAISER with The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op! Check it out and support two companies that strive to help both emerging and established Nova Scotian artists. \nThis year’s offering? \nSaturday June 22\, 8pm:\nThe year is 1602. Queen Elizabeth the first is disturbed about mysterious thunderstorms threatening the kingdom. She hires her master spy\, Sir Nicholas Fury\, and the court physician\, Doctor Stephen Strange\, to get to the bottom of it. Heroes\, villains\, curiosities\, and marvels come together in an epic battle spanning Europe and across to the New World. A school for gifted youngsters and their clairvoyant professor\, a fearless – and blind – mercenary\, even a familiar fantastic foursome all square off in the most ambitious crossover/staged reading of all time\, adapted by Dan Bray from the graphic novel ‘1602’ by Neil Gaiman… THE AVENGERS TRAGEDY! \nTickets are PWYC – to reserve\, e-transfer or email info@villainstheatre.com

SUMMARY:Assassins
DESCRIPTION:Assassins lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States\, in a one-act historical “revusical” that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald\, writers\, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman\, bend the rules of time and space\, taking us on a nightmarish roller coaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet\, interact and inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream. \nIt’s frank\, comedic\, dark\, and utterly compelling. The cry of the disenfranchised rings true in our current political and social climate\, with characters ripped from history speaking truth to the despair so often felt in 2019. \nAs with all of our shows\, we are partnering with a non-profit organization to raise funds and awareness. For this production\, we’re delighted to support the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. An advocacy\, education and funding group\, they provide supports and resources to the citizens of Nova Scotia suffering with a wide variety of mental health issues. We want to bring attention to the work they do\, and the desperate need for advocacy and education surrounding mental health care. $1 from every ticket sold is guaranteed to the charity. The more money we can raise to cover costs before the show\, the more we can donate! \n**TICKETS NOW ON SALE** \n***Assassins Cast & Crew*** \nBooth: Andrew Chandler*\nGuiteau: Mike Chandler*\nZangara: Cat McCluskey\nByck: Ali House\nHinckley: Tyler Craig\nFromme: Sasha Paiken\nMoore: Laura Thornton\nCzologosz: Tris Healy\nGoldman/As Cast: Katelyn Barker\nHerold/As Cast: Jakob Creighton\nAssistant/As Cast: Sarah Smith\nThe Balladeer: Julia Topple\nThe Proprietor: Leigh Fitzner-LeBlanc \nProducer: Laura Thornton\nAssociate Producer & Production Manager: Olivia McGinn\nDirector & Choreographer: Ian Gilmore*\nMusical Director: Sarah Richardson\nStage Manager: Ricky Buchanan\nAssistant Stage Manager: Christine Fitzner-Leblanc\nAssistant Stage Manager: Ian Richards \nCostume Design: Hannah Burgos\nLight Design: Olivia McGinn\nMarketing Design: Sean Skerry\nProps Design & Construction: Ian Richards\nSet Design & Construction: Dutch Swindells\nSound Design: June Zinck* \n*Appearing courtesy of the Canadian Actors Equity Association.
