SUMMARY:Some Blow Flutes
DESCRIPTION:Some Blow Flutes is a new play by HomeFirst Theatre’s Artistic Director\, Mary Vingoe. The play deals with the effects of memory loss\, both that brought on by illness and that which is self-induced as a way of numbing pain. The play asks the question; How can we heal when we cannot remember? Inspired by a quote from the I Ching which refers to how we respond to tragedy\, Some Blow Flutes is the story of Costas Frangoulis\, an elderly Greek shoe repair man whose wife Elena suffers from dementia and whose marriage has been eroded by a family secret. His life is altered when Sandra\, a professional organizer who cannot begin to organize her own life\, enters his shop. His teenage granddaughter Leah who cares for her grandmother is best friends with Sandra’s estranged daughter Marijke. Marijke is fourteen and pregnant. An unlikely friendship between Costas and Sandra and a chance meeting between Elena and Marijke turn to an unravelling of past lives and hidden grievances which play out with unexpected results. \nStarring:\nMary-Colin Chisholm\nHugh Thompson\nFrancine Deschepper\nAilsa Galbreath\nGina Thornhill \nTICKETS:\n$25 General\n$20 Student/Underwaged \nBuying tickets for a group of 10 or more? SUMMARY:Canadian Labour International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Mayworks Halifax presents a film screening curated by\nCANADIAN LABOUR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL \nCLiFF takes place this November in locations across Canada. Selected international films celebrate workers from around the world and shed light on issues that affect us all. \nAdmission by donation – PWYC!\nFREE Popcorn! \n***FILM PROGRAM***\nTotal run time: 60 min \nWORK (Bolivia\, Documentary\, 12 min)\nIn October of 2017\, people from more than 10 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean filmed their work routine. From dawn to dusk\, a mosaic of daily difficulties\, aspirations and dreams are revealed. It’s an eye-opening look into how everyday workers are perceived and how hard it can be to get ahead. \nKAMPUNG TAPIR (Indonesia/Malaysia\, Drama\, 17 min)\nOne Sunday afternoon\, migrant workers Anne and her husband leave their five-year-old daughter from Kampung Tapir (Tapir Village)\, Malaysia. On the way to Singapore\, their bus hits a wild Malayan tapir crossing the road\, but no one is eager to save it. In the struggle of choosing a country to settle down in\, Anne finds that she is like this endangered species\, drifting between places to find a better life. \nTRABAJADORES (USA\, Documentary\, 10 min)\n55 years later\, Arturo S. Rodríguez\, President of the United Farm Workers of America\, continues the task that César Chávez started\, with the upcoming threat of the new Trump administration and the negative impact it may have on undocumented workers’ jobs and rights. \nGUT FEELING (Canada\, Drama\, 2 min)\nA girl is at work when she is asked to put something away. She doesn’t feel comfortable with doing it\, which leads to an accident. \nLIFE OF DEATH (Indonesia\, Animation\, 5 min)\nDeath\, while struggling to balance his work and family life\, talks about his existence\, his job\, and his opinions on human beings in an interview from the documentary ‘Life of Death’. \nHAUNTED WITNESS (Canada\, Documentary\, 10 min)\nTrauma suffered by crime reporters is an under-reported and stigmatised issue. It is often forgotten or widely unacknowledged that like policeman and paramedics\, journalists are first responders to daily scenes of horror. Admitting to experiencing trauma to newsroom colleagues\, however\, is widely denounced within the industry. \nNOUVELLE CUISINE (Spain\, Animation\, 5 min)\nA chef that loves his job and enjoys the delicacies he cooks\, is preparing a very different menu for a peculiar group of clients.
