SUMMARY:Onelight Theatre Presents: Asheq - a free livestreamed reading
DESCRIPTION:This week Shahin Sayadi’s Asheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover returns to Kjipuktuk/Halifax\, Nova Scotia.\nOnelight Theatre’s 2018 hit will be presented in a special free virtual reading of Shahin Sayadi’s hit soon-to-be-published one-man show\, Asheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover.\nWritten and performed by Sayadi\, this compelling story will be live-streamed from the Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax’s north end.\nTo access this free live-streamed performance\, simply tune in to Onelight Theatre’s facebook page for the streaming.\n\n—\n\n\n“Sayadi is able to bring an entire world filled with different characters\, as he simply and seamlessly shifts between them….a tremendous performer”\n– Deanne Kearney\, Mooney on Theatre\n\nDeveloped under the artistic leadership of Shahin Sayadi\, Asheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover is the story of forbidden love\, a family divided by long-held secrets\, and a community trying to find balance between traditional ways and the modern world. The play culminates in a Zar exorcism ceremony\, intended to rid a young man of the “sickness” of his love for an outcast young woman\, that ultimately reveals a father’s long-buried secrets.\nAsheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover is set on the shores of the Persian Gulf in southern Iran where East African and Persian traditions have blended over time to produce unique cultural practices\, including the modern Zar rituals. The play explores how cultures and communities change over time: how traditions can be sustained from generation to generation and also how there can be sudden\, overnight cultural change.\nAsheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover premiered in 2018 at the Prismatic Arts Festival in Halifax\, and had its Ontario debut at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre in Toronto\, December 2018. SUMMARY:Bus Stop Theatre Writer's Circle
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP (IT’S FREE):\nhttp://bit.do/writerscircle \nABOUT:\nThe Bus Stop Theatre Writer’s Circle (formerly the Bus Stop Theatre Playwrights Unit) is an open invite writer’s collective. We meet monthly to share writing and feedback. We aim to create an affirming\, nurturing space to support the vulnerable practice of sharing new writing. Join us once or come every month – we just ask that you sign up in advance because capacity is limited.\n\nTo date we have been a theatre/playwright focused group\, and that’s where most of our expertise is. We value cross-pollination and we invite writers from other disciplines to join us! Whether you want to dip your toes into playwriting or you want to get feedback on your poetry/screenplay/short story\, we’d love to have you.\n\nWe have resources to support artists working towards professional productions\, but we welcome all writers\, whether you identify as “professional” or not.\n\nThe BST Writer’s Circle is organized by producer Meg Hubley and coordinator Karen Gross.\n\nHOW IT WORKS:\nWe meet on the third Sunday of every month.\n\nAfter you sign up\, we’ll confirm your spot (and send you the Zoom link) a week before the session. We have space for ten people who want to share work plus five people who just want to listen and give feedback.\n\nSessions are about two hours long with a break halfway through and ten minutes per writer to share writing and hear feedback. We go over the details of how sessions run every time\, so don’t worry if it’s your first time joining us! You’re also welcome to email writerscircle@thebusstoptheatre.org with any questions.\n\nWe suggest bringing a maximum of two pages of writing to allow enough time for responses. Writers are encouraged to come to the session with a specific question or issue they’re working on and want feedback about. The facilitator can also offer reflection questions to the group.\n\nThis is a reciprocal exchange: sharing your feedback is as important as sharing your work.\n\nIf you’re new to the Writer’s Circle and you want to get a feel for the group before you share your writing\, or if you just don’t have work to share this month\, you’re welcome to attend as a listener.\n\nLogo by Colleen MacIsaac.
