SUMMARY:Some Blow Flutes
DESCRIPTION:Some Blow Flutes is a new play by HomeFirst Theatre’s Artistic Director\, Mary Vingoe. The play deals with the effects of memory loss\, both that brought on by illness and that which is self-induced as a way of numbing pain. The play asks the question; How can we heal when we cannot remember? Inspired by a quote from the I Ching which refers to how we respond to tragedy\, Some Blow Flutes is the story of Costas Frangoulis\, an elderly Greek shoe repair man whose wife Elena suffers from dementia and whose marriage has been eroded by a family secret. His life is altered when Sandra\, a professional organizer who cannot begin to organize her own life\, enters his shop. His teenage granddaughter Leah who cares for her grandmother is best friends with Sandra’s estranged daughter Marijke. Marijke is fourteen and pregnant. An unlikely friendship between Costas and Sandra and a chance meeting between Elena and Marijke turn to an unravelling of past lives and hidden grievances which play out with unexpected results. \nStarring:\nMary-Colin Chisholm\nHugh Thompson\nFrancine Deschepper\nAilsa Galbreath\nGina Thornhill \nTICKETS:\n$25 General\n$20 Student/Underwaged \nBuying tickets for a group of 10 or more? SUMMARY:The Little Years: Presented by Matchstick Theatre
DESCRIPTION:With just six performances from October 11th-14th\, Matchstick Theatre proudly presents John Mighton’s The Little Years\, the last production of its 2018 season\, at the Bus Stop Theatre with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Theatre Nova Scotia. \nJohn Mighton’s epic masterpiece orbits Kate\, who begins the play as a young woman of 14\, and follows her life from 1957 to 2002. Now in 2018\, where many are still battling for equality and respect\, Mighton’s drama presents a microcosm of progress to remind us that there is something to fight for\, even if we ourselves don’t always reap the results of our efforts. \nFrom the playwright: Kate possesses the makings of a gifted mathematician with an enthusiasm for exploring the mysteries of space and time. But this is the 1950s and women are routinely laughed out of scientific circles. Besides\, every family has its star\, and Kate’s brother already holds that distinction. Hindered by prejudices against women\, Kate is confined to a life of unfulfilling jobs\, leading her to become bitter and unhappy. The Little Years confronts the impact of chauvinism and explores the nature of fame\, the value of art\, and the passing of time. \nKate – Colleen MacIsaac\nGrace – Christine Daniels\nRoger – Matthew Lumley\nAlice – Mauralea Austin\nYoung Kate / Tanya – Kayla Gunn\nMr.Castle / Doctor / Mr.York – Sean Skerry\nMary – Amanda Mullally\nNorman – Sam Vigneault \nDirected by Jake Planinc\nStage Management Chelsea Dickie\nProduced by Alex Mills\nSet Design Wesley Babcock\nLighting Design Alison Crosby\nSound Design Jordan Palmer \nTickets are $25 ($20 for artists\, students\, seniors\, underwaged\, and Bus Stop Co-op members) and can be booked in advance through Ticket Halifax\, or by contacting matchsticktheatre@gmail.com\nWe will have one Pay What You Can performance on Saturday the 13th at 2pm. \nhttps://www.tickethalifax.com/events/57262894/john-mightons-the-little-years \nThe Little Years opens on October 11th and runs for just six performances with shows at 8:00pm on the 11th-14th and 2:00pm on the 13th and 14th. The matinee on the 13th is Pay What You Can. Run time is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes\, with a 10 minute intermission.

SUMMARY:The Mariachi Ghost - Rencor Vivo (Prismatic)
DESCRIPTION:The supernatural and magical make-up of The Mariachi Ghost consists of seven musicians and one dancer. The Winnipeg based band has been thrilling international audiences with their unique blend of Mexican folklore\, prog-rock\, and theatrical flare for close to ten years. \nRencor Vivo \n“Magical Realism” is the genre of Rencor Vivo. It is split into three parts: musical theatre\, storytelling (a ghost story)\, and cultural hypnosis. The show brings the sounds and quality of antique Mexico to an English-speaking contemporary stage through the story about the rancor of life in a ghost town set in old Mexico. Influenced by works like ‘Doña Bárbara’ written by Rómulo Gallegos\, ‘Pedro Páramo’ written by Juan Rulfo\, and ‘100 years of solitude’ written by Gabriel García Márquez – The Mariachi Ghost will perform their latest musical work\, embedded into a script that honors the elements of the genre and take you through an epic landscape full of archetypical characters whose bitterness\, hope\, lost promise and dreams exist in. \nThese works have consequently found their way into the hands\, and soul of the lead singer (of The Mariachi Ghost) Jorge Requena Ramos. He is connected to the stories through geographic closeness to the town in which ‘Pedro Páramo’ is set. The family stories told by Requena Ramos’ grandfather closely resembles the ideas and characters in the book. This inspiration took the form of a musical album followed by a script\, resulting in the theatrical combination that is Rencor Vivo (translates to The Living Hate). \nSeptember 15th @8:30 PM \nSeptember 16th @7 PM \nTickets: https://prismatic.tickethalifax.com/events/55408139/rencor-vivo-the-mariachi-ghost

SUMMARY:She Wolf (Halifax Fringe)
DESCRIPTION:HALIFAX FRINGE FESTIVAL \nTickets on sale on August 16th\, 2018 \n*Winner – Most Outstanding Performer – NZ Fringe 2018*\n*Winner – Highly Recommended Show – Brighton Fringe 2018*\n*Nominated – Best in Fringe – NZ Fringe 2018* \nComing directly from Edinburgh Fringe\, the world’s largest arts festival!! \nQueen Margaret was the original Cersei Lannister. She was the model for Claire Underwood. She was a woman so cutthroat and cold\, she would give Lady Macbeth a run for her money. Only\, none of that is true. The way we view women in positions of power hasn’t changed much. \nFrom Hillary Clinton’s emails\, to Margaret of Anjou cursing the royal family\, the way we view women in positions of power hasn’t changed much. \nPeople don’t tend to realize that Shakespeare’s histories are propaganda\, and even 500 years later\, very little has changed: Artists need to appeal to government for funding\, leaders and rulers want to be praised\, and women with power are more terrifying than the devil. \nSo here we are in the 21st century\, and the question still begs to be asked: If all history remembers of you are the lies\, does the truth even matter? \nYes\, this is a comedy.

SUMMARY:The Negroes Are Congregating (Halifax Fringe)
DESCRIPTION:HALIFAX FRINGE FESTIVAL \nFresh from a sold-out run at SummerWorks Performance Festival (Toronto) and winner of the New Performance Text Award\, The Negroes Are Congregating stops in Halifax for the Fringe Festival\, the second last stop in their 4-city tour. \nThe play asks a lot of impolite questions about the ongoing effects of racism and how that ideology continues to exists in Canada and around the world. Canadian-Jamaican writer\, Natasha Adiyana Morris\, infuses a taste of Toronto that incorporates accents\, landmarks and a sort of local trivia often ignored by mainstream media. Themes of physical\, mental\, and spiritual freedom cycle from beginning to end. \n“Talking about race is exhausting and so I wanted to form my thoughts into live characters\, displaying multiple sides of the race conversation. Some characters are full-on revolutionaries\, others are complacent\, there are parodies and plenty of satire but it ALL reflects uncomfortable truths.” \nProduced by Troy De Four; Written and Directed by Natasha Adiyana Morris; Performed by Angaer Arop\, David Delisca\, and Dennis W. SUMMARY:Mad Ones: A Reading of a Play in Progress followed by Discussion
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an early draft reading and talk back discussion of a play in development entitled Mad Ones. Laura was awarded creation and dramaturgy funding from Arts Nova Scotia and Eastern Front Theatre’s Pitch It event for the development of a piece under the same name in 2016. However\, after having the privilege of meeting with the facilitators and other artists at Tangled Arts + Disability this past spring as part of their FLOURISHING series\, Laura decided to reimagine a new story\, using most of the same characters from the original script. \nThis reinvention of Mad Ones is set in the infamous Bedlam (Bethlem) Asylum in London in 1825. It is the story of Guen\, a mad woman\, and her lover Tsura\, who meet on a ship of fools – a place representing the dangerous yet inspired\, liminal space of Guen’s mind. This imaginal setting is juxtaposed with the harsh realities of Bedlam\, and Guen’s relationship with Dr. Jack Williams\, a well-meaning physician whose privilege and training are at odds with his high ideals for the treatment of asylum inmates. The play’s exploration of the origins of Moral Treatment poses many of the same questions psychiatry is faced with today\, such as: How can a mad person fully reclaim self-determination and volition if decisions about their reality are made for them? Mad Ones explores the difficult choices that mad folk – particularly mad women – have faced throughout our lineage of medicalizing anomalous experience. In this play\, Guen must choose between accepting help that denies aspects of her agency and autonomy\, or a difficult path where her choices and her values remain her own. \nMad Ones is an early draft of a play in development\, and Laura would like to thank Tangled Arts + Disability\, Arts Nova Scotia for contributing their support and inspiration in the early days of its creation and presentation. Also a sincere thank you to the Playwright’s Atlantic Resource Centre for making this reading possible. There will be a content warning for reference to violence\, descriptions of sexual assault and suicidality\, miscarriage\, and difficult subject matter. Laura will do her best to tell this story truthfully and yet responsibly. \n*FLOURISHING is a collaboration between Tangled Arts + Disability and The Canadian Association for Community Living Research and Development on Inclusion and Society (IRIS)\, Adjacent Possibilities\, and the inspired and inspiring disability scholar and artist Catherine Frazee. The goal is to explore the concept of flourishing as it exists alongside frailty\, disability and suffering. As part of this parternship\, Tangled Art Gallery is producing a series featuring 7 artists from across Canada from September to December. \nThis presentation is at an accessible venue with scripts for those who need them.

SUMMARY:A Feebleminded Dictator at the Bus Stop Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Halifax Fringe’s 2017 Best of Fest winner returns to Halifax for One-Night-Only!\nMum\, Mantis and Mouse cordially invite old friends and new friends to come frolic in their new and improved world of shadows and games on August 8th @ the Bus Stop Theatre @ 8:00pm.\nTickets are PWYC\, with a suggested donation of $10~$15\n(proceeds go towards helping fund our trip to the Edmonton Fringe Festival! woohoo!)\nWe hope to see you all there 🙂 \nSynopsis:\nIn a haunting world of shadows and make-believe\, watch three enchantingly grotesque characters struggle with vanity\, power\, and who makes the rules. \nThe play tells the story of three women living in isolation who have fallen prey to the vicious vanity of one. The women are free to play their games of ludicrous invention until tyrannical fantasies go too far. Enclosed in a haunting world of shadows and make-believe\, the show addresses power hierarchies and how the ego of one can be the destruction of many. Grey Gardens meets Looney Tunes in this absurdist fall brought to life with shadow play\, outlandish physical comedy\, and enchantingly grotesque characters. \nA Feebleminded Dictator is an original shadow play created by international trio Erin Johnston (Canada)\, Brittny Rebhuhn (IA) and Kate Tobie (CA). Originally created as their thesis piece at Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre\, the trio has continued to develop and tour the piece\, recently working at Mermaid Theatre of Windsor’s Loft Residency program. Coming up next is Edmonton Fringe 2018! \nWinner of Halifax Fringe 2017 Best of Fest\nWinner of Nugget Fringe 2017 Best of Fest\nWinner of Nugget Fringe 2017 Fringiest Fringe

SUMMARY:Opera Backwards: A Very Queer Show
DESCRIPTION:In the tradition of “Broadway Backwards”\, the annual NYC show where musical theatre numbers are given an LGBT twist\, HSOF presents its fourth annual salute to Halifax Pride: “Opera Backwards”. Come and experience gay and lesbian stories told through the great arias and duets of opera and operetta\, sung by the participants in the fourteenth annual Halifax Summer Opera Festival. \nTickets $20 each — the theatre is small and this event always sells out\, so we do recommend buying your tickets in advance 🙂 Any extra tickets will be sold at the door. \nFacebook event: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1380090872126020/?active_tab=about \nPurchase tickets here: \nhttp://www.tickethalifax.com/events/54642568/opera-backwards-a-very-queer-show
