SUMMARY:Peter Fechter: 59 Minutes - Presented by Matchstick Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Matchstick Theatre proudly presents its production of Jordan Tannahill’s Governor General’s award-winning play Peter Fechter: 59 Minutes\, this March at The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op. \nHalf documentary\, Peter Fechter: 59 Minutes tells the very real story of two boys who attempt to join the many who defected into West Berlin by crossing the Berlin Wall. The attempt\, however\, results in eighteen-year-old Peter getting shot in the lower pelvis. He lay between the border’s barricades for approximately an hour before dying from this injury. Half conceptualization\, Tannahill expertly navigates these fifty-nine minutes from gunshot to final breath\, exploring what could possibly have motivated Peter to risk his life to cross the wall. What can matter to us so much that we risk everything for it? \nThe play stars Peter Sarty\, Henricus Gielis\, Andrew Chandler\, and Rena Kossatz. The play is directed by Alison Crosby\, stage managed byChelsea Dickie\, produced by Alex Mills\, and designed by Wesley Babcock\, Jordan Palmer\, Anna Shepard\, and Emma Roode. \nTickets are $15 ($12 for students\, seniors\, underwaged\, and Bus Stop Co-op members) and can be booked in advance through Ticket Halifax\, or by contacting matchsticktheatre@gmail.com \nhttp://www.tickethalifax.com/events/51541383/peter-fechter-59-minutes \nPeter Fechter: 59 Minutes opens on March 1st\, and runs for five shows until Sunday the 4th. \nMatchstick Theatre produces contemporary Canadian plays\, striving to ignite\, affect\, and ultimately transform its audience with every performance. We are grateful to be supported by Theatre Nova Scotia.

DESCRIPTION:Take an unforgettable journey through the Neverland you never knew this February 20-25th\, as Whale Song Theatre brings “Peter and the Starcatcher” to life. \nEmbark on an adventure to a whimsical world filled with pirates\, mermaids and magic. SUMMARY:Freedom Singer Album Release Tour
DESCRIPTION:Khari Wendell McLelland is back in Halifax! This time\, for the release of his debut solo album Freedom Singer\, along with very special guests The Santified Brothers. \nFreedom Singer is the debut solo album of Khari Wendell McClelland. He collected and interpreted songs that might have accompanied his great-great-great grandmother Kizzy as she fled US slavery into Canada during the mid 1800s on The Underground Railroad. Khari uses a range of styles like hip-hop\, gospel\, folk and soul to create a bridge from past to present. He spent several weeks in Halifax in 2015 researching this rich history. \nHailing from North Preston\, The Sanctified Brothers (formerly known as the Deep River Boys) have quickly established themselves as one of the best gospel music groups in Canada. Together\, they are shaking up the perceptions of gospel music with fresh twists on classics\, which they infuse with elements of blues\, funk and rock. \nFull Press Release \nFreedom Singer had its world premiered in Toronto in February 2017 at Crow’s Theatre inaugurating the Scotia Bank Community Theatre before touring across Canada to Regina\, Calgary\, Winnipeg\, Halifax\, Montreal and Ottawa. Most recently\, Freedom Singer completed its fall tour serenading cites from east to west including Gananoque\, Guelph\, Dawson City\, Windsor\, Whitehorse\, Vancouver\, and Edmonton.

SUMMARY:Matchstick's Playreading Series: Joyride by Michael Melski
DESCRIPTION:For the first instalment of their 2018 playreading series\, Matchstick Theatre presents Michael Melski’s Joyride on Monday\, February 12th at The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op. \nJoyride\, the play that launched the celebrated Cape Breton playwright’s career\, was first performed at the Atlantic Fringe Festival in 1994. It is a reflection of post-industrial Cape Breton\, a setting that is recognizable today. As the author describes it: \n“Most of our old friends had moved off the island for work. Nothing new in that\, but the young faces that were hanging out…seemed strange to me. There was something a little scared\, a little desperate that kept occurring in the eyes. It was two years after the McDonald’s murders. But the wake wasn’t over. Maybe it never will be.” \nIn the play we meet Rachel\, earning minimum wage as a convenience store clerk\, Jess\, working for his father’s seasonal landscaping business\, and Craig\, home on probation and unemployed. With nowhere to go and nothing to do\, the three friends get caught up in a whirlwind. \nA masterful hour of Nova Scotian dialogue\, Matchstick Theatre’s reading of Michael Melski’s Joyride features Kya Mosey as Rachel\, Henricus Gielis as Jess\, and Taylor Olson as Craig\, with stage directions read by Chelsea Dickie. \nThe doors for the reading will be open as of 6:30\, and the reading will begin promptly at 7:00pm. Admission is Pay What You Can at the door\, in support of both Matchstick Theatre and The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op.

SUMMARY:You Have to Plan for the Possibility of Yarn Not Being in a Ball
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between The Accidental Mechanics Group + Workshirt Opera\, presented by the The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op. \nMichael Lake and STEWART LEGERE react to the year through three short performances\, a surprise to everyone (including the performers). YHTPFTPOYNBIAB is an experiment in connection\, risk\, trust\, and an expression of wild abandon. \nHere’s the situation: \nMichael and Stewart create the performances using a set of objects and a set of rules. \nThe objects are: a piano\, a cake\, a skirt\, a ladder\, a bottle of wine\, a hammer\, five microphones\, and twenty balls of yarn. \nThe rules are: there must be a magic trick\, a dance\, an explosion\, a reunion\, an accident\, a song\, fake words\, and a genuine apology for a specific thing you did to a specific person. \nPART ONE: Michael performs a piece by Stewart\, without prior knowledge of the content. \nPART TWO: Stewart performs a piece by Michael\, without prior knowledge of the content. \nPART THREE: Special guests perform a piece by Michael and Stewart\, without prior knowledge of the content. \nTickets are PWYC in advance\, or $10 at the door.

SUMMARY:David Sedaris' Uncomfortable Christmas
DESCRIPTION:“My kind of X-mas show”\n“Made me cry with joy”\n“Dark humor\, satire\, brilliant acting… don’t miss this show!”\nBest of Theatre 2016 – Local Xpress \nKick at the Dark Theatre Company gleefully announces the remount of their holiday treat\, David Sedaris’ Uncomfortable Christmas. Lightly reworked for a new venue\, this “Christmas show for the rest of us” features three Christmas-themed monologues by humorist\, author and radio contributor David Sedaris\, along with songs performed by local duo Guy & Doll. This unique holiday show is an irreverent\, darkly comic take on the extremes that people will go to at Christmastime. It runs Dec 6-10th at The Bus Stop Theatre (2203 Gottingen Street\, Halifax)\, with shows at 8pm\, and several weekend matinees. \nDavid Sedaris’ work is well known in the literary and humour worlds\, and here\, Kick at the Dark introduces us to three of Sedaris’ grinch-iest characters – a frustrated theatre critc savages an elementary school Christmas pageant\, a TV executve turns a town against one of their own so she can make the ultmate Christmas special\, and a wealthy man gives new meaning to “Christmas Means Giving” in an increasingly desperate competton with a neighbour for the most meaningful Christmas card. Performed by Guy & Doll\, David Sedaris’ Uncomfortable Christmas also features hilarious original Christmas songs by Jonathan Coulton\, The Doubleclicks\, Rachel Lark\, and Tim Minchin. \nThis performance is recommended for those aged 13 and up\, and runs approximately 75 minutes. \nPerformed by Katerina Bakolias\, Jamie Bradley\, Andrew Chandler\nDirected by Andrew Chandler & Jamie Bradley\nMusic by Guy & Doll \nProduced by Katerina Bakolias & Andrew Chandler\nStage Management by Jessica Oliver\nSet by Morgan Melnyk\nLighting Design by Matt Downey\nMedia Design by Sean Skerry \nJamie Bradley and Andrew Chandler appear by permission of Canadian Actors Equity Association.\nStories by David Sedaris are read with the permission of Don Congdon Associates\, Inc. © 1997 by David Sedaris.

SUMMARY:suddenlyLISTEN Music presents: "Applications" with Scott Thomson and guests
DESCRIPTION:Applications\n \nScott Thomson – trombone/compositions (Montreal)\nEmily Denison – trumpet (Montreal)\nAndrew Jackson – trombone (Halifax)\nLukas Pearse – bass (Halifax) \n$20 or pay what you can\, available at the door \nScott Thomson writes: “I’m working on a new suite called Applications\, a series of six linked songs that set the six sections of the poem “Applications of the Doctrine” by Robert Hass\, the celebrated Bay Area poet who was the US poet laureate in the mid-nineties. As with all of my ‘art song’-style composing\, I am writing the suite so that the pieces are modular in nature\, to be sung or played instrumentally by ensembles of different sizes and instrumentations\, and to be animated by different kinds of improvisation. The suite was commissioned by my friend and colleague\, the late Ken Aldcroft for his band\, Convergence\, with singer-dancer Susanna Hood as a guest\, through the Canada Council for the Arts. I am likewise conceiving of the music for other kinds of ensemble –– some radically different in configuration –– and working with the Halifax workshop band as a way to develop and refine the material\, a key part of the composing process for me.” \nPhoto of Scott Thomson\, credit Frank Rubolino

SUMMARY:She Sings as She Flies • Revisiting the Helen Creighton Song Collection
DESCRIPTION:She Sings as She Flies • Revisiting the Helen Creighton Song Collection was conceived by first cousins and longtime creative collaborators Mary Jane Lamond and Laurel MacDonald as a special production of their Patchwork vocal performance project. \nShe Sings as She Flies features Mary Jane and Laurel performing songs from the Gaelic and English language traditions. Joining them are Nicole LeBlanc\, Kirsten Olivia and Naomi Dawn Poulette\, singing selections from the Acadian\, African Nova Scotian\, and Mi’kmaq communities respectively. The songs are integrated with archival recordings and images\, live vocal looping\, sound design and video stage projections. \nThe production looks not only at the rich legacy of the music itself\, but also poses questions regarding the circumstances of Helen Creighton’s work\, and the social and cultural environment then\, and now. She Sings as She Flies is a groundbreaking new production by five uniquely talented Nova Scotian singers\, illustrating the richness\, diversity and complex history behind this unique folksong collection. \nShe Sings as She Flies has been made possible through the generous support of the Nova Scotia 150 Forward Fund and the Helen Creighton Folklore Society. \n\nTickets available at TICKET HALIFAX
