SUMMARY:suddenlyLISTEN Music presents: "Applications" with Scott Thomson and guests
DESCRIPTION:Applications\n \nScott Thomson – trombone/compositions (Montreal)\nEmily Denison – trumpet (Montreal)\nAndrew Jackson – trombone (Halifax)\nLukas Pearse – bass (Halifax) \n$20 or pay what you can\, available at the door \nScott Thomson writes: “I’m working on a new suite called Applications\, a series of six linked songs that set the six sections of the poem “Applications of the Doctrine” by Robert Hass\, the celebrated Bay Area poet who was the US poet laureate in the mid-nineties. As with all of my ‘art song’-style composing\, I am writing the suite so that the pieces are modular in nature\, to be sung or played instrumentally by ensembles of different sizes and instrumentations\, and to be animated by different kinds of improvisation. The suite was commissioned by my friend and colleague\, the late Ken Aldcroft for his band\, Convergence\, with singer-dancer Susanna Hood as a guest\, through the Canada Council for the Arts. I am likewise conceiving of the music for other kinds of ensemble –– some radically different in configuration –– and working with the Halifax workshop band as a way to develop and refine the material\, a key part of the composing process for me.” \nPhoto of Scott Thomson\, credit Frank Rubolino

SUMMARY:She Sings as She Flies • Revisiting the Helen Creighton Song Collection
DESCRIPTION:She Sings as She Flies • Revisiting the Helen Creighton Song Collection was conceived by first cousins and longtime creative collaborators Mary Jane Lamond and Laurel MacDonald as a special production of their Patchwork vocal performance project. \nShe Sings as She Flies features Mary Jane and Laurel performing songs from the Gaelic and English language traditions. Joining them are Nicole LeBlanc\, Kirsten Olivia and Naomi Dawn Poulette\, singing selections from the Acadian\, African Nova Scotian\, and Mi’kmaq communities respectively. The songs are integrated with archival recordings and images\, live vocal looping\, sound design and video stage projections. \nThe production looks not only at the rich legacy of the music itself\, but also poses questions regarding the circumstances of Helen Creighton’s work\, and the social and cultural environment then\, and now. She Sings as She Flies is a groundbreaking new production by five uniquely talented Nova Scotian singers\, illustrating the richness\, diversity and complex history behind this unique folksong collection. \nShe Sings as She Flies has been made possible through the generous support of the Nova Scotia 150 Forward Fund and the Helen Creighton Folklore Society. \n\nTickets available at TICKET HALIFAX

SUMMARY:Gabrielle Papillon - Keep the Fire Album Release Show
DESCRIPTION:For a sneak peek at the album: http://bit.ly/2jZK0RO \nKeep The Fire\n“When you come to your knees / when you hold what you need / you will know what to keep\,” sings Gabrielle Papillon near the end of her sixth\, most adventurous album. Hear it as a promise\, hear it as a mantra\, hear it as a weary warning from someone who’s been there—the sweeping and heart-piercing Keep the Fire is packed full of thoughts like this\, wise and poignant\, empathetic and understanding\, open to interpretation. \nPapillon’s music\, too\, is now open to interpretation—though it remains confidently\, almost nonchalantly rooted in folk strumming and gentle vocal phrasings\, on Keep the Fire she has embraced her pop leanings and pushed them to the forefront. The songs pulse with strings and drama\, keys\, and evocative percussion that combine for surprising left-turns\, the kind of thing you’d find on a playlist between Florence Welch and Thom Yorke\, bold without sacrificing emotion. \nThis art-pop progression comes partly from Papillon’s continued relationship with producer and pop-folk whiz Daniel Ledwell\, helmer of her last\, award-winning chart-topper The Tempest of Old. Recording this batch of songs—imagined\, Papillon says\, as a backdrop to life\, a life score—at Ledwell’s Echo Lake studio made for a foundation of strength and collaboration\, which allowed for the new part of her record-making process: Corey LeRue. LeRue\, the EDM pop genius behind Neon Dreams\, lifts Keep the Fire into a new realm with his secret mixing recipes\, adding heft and punch to pretty songs. The approaches may be disparate\, but the result is something thrilling—melodic and catchy\, memorable and affecting. \nIt’s always a letdown when an artist tries new things on record and gives you the same old treatment live. Gabrielle Papillon does not do this—in fact\, her show has evolved faster than the recordings\, a tight three- to four-piece band acting as pillars around its diminutive leader\, who commands any size stage with measured guitar-playing and a casually huge voice mixed in with observational humour. The band is skilful and supportive\, offering meticulously honed musicianship and a familiar interplay that comes from spending years on the road together. In a live setting\, these new songs come to life with vigour and verve. \nSo stay open\, interpret. Sing out\, dance slow. Hold the spark\, keep the fire.

SUMMARY:The Mariachi Ghost
DESCRIPTION:Winnipeg-based music sensation\, The Mariachi Ghost\, has been commissioned by the Prismatic Arts Festival to develop a new theatre / music hybrid performance: Rencor Vivo. \nMore information: http://prismaticfestival.com/events/the-mariachi-ghost/ \nFrom driving rhythms and soaring melodies to brooding synths and dreamy vocal breaks\, The Mariachi Ghost is known in Canada and United States for fusing traditional Mexican songs\, progressive rock and a flair for the dramatic\, to ignite the world of their namesake’s tenuous existence. \nIn Rencor Vivo\, The Mariachi Ghost brings to life Juan Rulfo’s novel\, Pedro Paramo in a spectacle of theatre\, music\, dance\, video projection. Inspired by magical realist literature\, Rencor Vivo is a visceral story told using the local lowbrow slang of Rulfo’s homeland. The style is a perfect mix of tradition and modernity. \nThe Mariachi Ghost are coming to Halifax to develop Rencor Vivo. They will perform excerpts from the production and a concert of their unique music. The full production of Rencor Vivo will debut at Prismatic 2018! \nGet Tickets: http://prismatic.tickethalifax.com/events/45841101/rencorvivo-the-mariachi-ghost

SUMMARY:Laban Method Movement Analysis (for Actors)
DESCRIPTION:Laban Method Movement Analysis (for Actors) \nwith Kathryn Reeves \nThursday September 7\, 10am \nThe Bus Stop Theatre \nA system of movements to aid actors in getting into a character using their physicality\, asking artists to go through and explore in the 8 different effort actions. Artists need to come with a monologue prepared. It is highly physical\, and highly rewarding. \nLaban Movement Analysis was developed by Rudolf Laban (1879-1958).  Laban was a scientist\, teacher\, artist\, social activist\, visionary\, and a creator.  Combined with Irmgard Bartenieff’s (1890 – 1981) contributions to the Body category\, the LMA work is a living system that continues to evolve. \nThe Effort actions\, or what Laban sometimes described as dynamics\, is a system for understanding the more subtle characteristics about movement with respect to inner intention. The difference between punching someone in anger and reaching for a glass is slight in terms of body organization – both rely on extension of the arm. The attention to the strength of the movement\, the control of the movement and the timing of the movement are very different. \nEffort has four subcategories (Effort factors)\, each of which has two opposite polarities (Effort elements). \nLength: 4 hours \nPrice: $40 \nNOTES: 15 person limit
