SUMMARY:Emerging Queer Artists Double Bill - Queer Acts Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:Emerging Queer Artists Double-Bill (60 Min\, Bus Stop Theatre) \nQueer Acts has partnered with Raven Davis as mentor and Jade Byard Peek is our local emerging queer artist! Jade is a Black and Mi’kmaw Artist working with Raven in a new piece entitled “fried”. Fried is a performance piece that confronts the colonial expectation of the presentation of black femme bodies in white spaces\, intersected with conflicting notions trans-femme “passing” Ideals. While engaging conversations of appropriation\, harassment\, and tokenism\, Fried explores the labour\, pain\, and struggle of maintaining and straightening afro-textured hair\, while balancing of culture\, work\, and personal pressures and expectations. Using the combination of audio\, monologue\, and the act of straightening hair under time constraints\, shows the labour of being a black trans woman in a humid city\, depicting the constant assault on black women’s bodies\, especially their hair. \nFrom Toronto\, we have writer/actor François Macdonald who comes to us with his play Aquarius\, directed by Sunny Drake. In April 1975\, the Aquarius bathhouse in downtown Montreal was firebombed\, killing three patrons\, two of whom were never identified or claimed. Aquarius tells the story of two men who met in the bathhouse that night. Originally conceived as part of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s 2016/17 Emerging Creators Unit\, first performed at the 38th Rhubarb Festival in Toronto this past February and shared again at Toronto’s Queer Pride Festival last month\, Aquarius is an exploration of sexuality\, repression\, violence and memory as it relates to Montreal in the 1970s and to the recent legalization of homosexuality by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in 1969. Creator and performer — François Macdonald\, Director — Sunny Drake\, Dramaturge — Mel Hague\, Sound Designer — Jason Thomson \nThe Bus Stop Theatre\nFriday July 14th\, 6:30PM\nSaturday July 15th\, 8:30PM\nSunday July 16th\, 2:00PM \nTICKET HALIFAX LINK

SUMMARY:Kooni - Queer Acts Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:Written and performed by Izad Etemadi\, Direction and Dramaturgy by Liza Balkan\, Film Direction by Moze Mossanen and Stage Management by Steph Raposo. (60 Min\, Bus Stop Theatre) \n[koo-knee] Persian. Noun.\n1. A person who is known to have anal sex. This term is most often used towards men to imply homosexuality.2. Commonly used as an insult.3. Mostly used as slang for “fag.” \n“Dude\, you’re so Kooni.” \nHis parents left Iran over 30 years ago in search for a better life for their children. The KAMP Cabaret Band will include musicians from the Halifax Music Co-Op\, under the Musical Direction of John Bogardus. \nA ticket to KAMP Songspiel gives you admission to two separate stage readings of the play presented during the STAGES Theatre Festival on May 16th and 27th! \nSo that’s THREE performances for one ticket. \n\nDescription:\nThe Nazis hated them because they were gay… but that’s what saved them. \nKAMP is a two-act musical that tells the story of a group of homosexual men\, interred in a Nazi concentration camp\, who use their artistic talents to secretly produce their own musical revue; a project that would give them hope to survive\, hold on to their identities\, and maintain their humanity. KAMP is based on historical truth. \nThis reading is presented in a unique way. \n  \nHow the ‘multiple readings’ thing works:\nAfter you have enjoyed\, experienced and lived the music at the songspiel… \nThe play receives a first reading in week one of the STAGES Theatre Festival\, then a second reading in week two after work has been done. \n‘KAMP’ (by Jamie Bradley & Garry Williams ) will be the second play script to receive this treatment. We initiated this process in 2016 and it proved successful and very useful to the writer. \nSession 1 will feature a staged-reading of this new work in-development followed by a moderated feedback session with the audience.  Over the course of ten days\, the playwrights will rework the piece (heeding OR ignoring the audience’s comments!) for a reading to take place the following week.\n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Transfiguration Day
DESCRIPTION:Admission $12 ($14 includes download code\, for those living in the 21st century)\n\nTransfiguration Day is a project comprised of singer-songwriter Thomas McCallum\, singer Karis Tees\, and cellist / singer-songwriter Lydia Mainville. August 6th is celebrated as the Feast of the Transfiguration in the ancient calendar\, and it was on this date that the trio first performed together. Playing ethereal music steeped in tradition\, Transfiguration Day has recorded two songs at the Old Confidence Lodge in January\, 2017. A full-length album can be expected in the not-so-distant future. https://www.transfigurationday.com/\n\n\nLydia Mainville is a cellist\, singer-songwriter and fiddler’s daughter from Darling’s Island\, NB. At once an innovator and traditionalist\, she creates experimental folk music steeped in classical and celtic roots. Her delicate melodies float over soundscapes that ebb and flow like the tide. Lydia’s expressive sounds echo in concert halls\, farmer’s markets\, and living rooms across Canada. https://lydiamainville.bandcamp.com/\n\nKurtis Eugene performs in the great folk-blues tradition\, but also incorporates it to create strikingly modern music reminiscent of a marriage between Fleet Foxes and Radiohead. https://kurtiseugene.bandcamp.com/releases\n\nBlue Lobelia is the pseudonym of Rachel Bruch\, an innovative vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who uses loop pedal technology to weave a complex and beautiful web of sound. https://bluelobelia.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Mug
DESCRIPTION:The Mayworks Halifax Festival presents \nA New Play by In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association\nMay 6th  7pm \nMay 7th 2pm \nMay 7th 7pm \n\nMug revolves around the Mug Shots of three formerly incarcerated people – photographs that span collectively almost 50 years of being in conflict with oneself and the Justice System. When a photograph is captured we often refer to it as ‘taking’ the photograph. This process of taking is encapsulated by the taking of the mug shot. However\, when a person is convicted of committing an offence\, the process of taking involves much more. When a person is incarcerated\, the liberty of free movement is taken. The person’s clothes are taken. The ability to make many of their own decisions is taken. Through Mug\, four persons relive their past by offering their stories and invite us all to take the challenge of giving. \n Featuring performances by JRDN\n \n\nCast & Crew:\nCast: Craig Kelly\, Lance Perry\, Darren Tynes and JRDN\n\nDirected by Sobaz Benjamin\nWith assistance from: Liam Petite\, Jacob Sampson\, Michael Tennyson and Jordan Metro\n\nBiographies\n\nSobaz Benjamin\, Founder and Executive Director of In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association\, is an accomplished and recognized film-director\, as well as a community advocate\, youth mentor\, program facilitator and educator.
