SUMMARY:Blanket Exercise with Elder Billy Lewis
DESCRIPTION:From 1:30 pm – 4 pm on Tuesday August 20th\, join us at The Bus Stop Theatre (2203 Gottingen St\, K’jipuktuk/Halifax) for a blanket exercise facilitated by Shila LeBlanc\, Doug Rigby\, Mary Rigby\, and Elder Billy Lewis. \nThis event is jointly presented by 2b theatre company and The Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative. \nThis is a pay what you can event (suggested donation is $20\, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds). All proceeds will be evenly split between the Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative and the Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Centre. Please note that the elder fee has already been confirmed\, separate from PWYC contributions. \nTo Sign Up Click Here \nAny questions can be forwarded to karen@2btheatre.com. \nABOUT THE KAIROS BLANKET EXERCISE \nThe blanket exercise is a unique\, interactive\, and participatory history lesson developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders\, knowledge keepers\, and educators. \nDeveloped in response to the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in 1996 –which recommended education about Canadian-Indigenous history as one of the key steps to reconciliation — the blanket exercise covers more than 500 years in a 90-minute experiential workshop that aims to foster understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Since its creation\, the exercise has been updated several times to include new information such as the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation final report. \nDuring the exercise\, participants walk on blankets representing the land and into the role of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis peoples by reading scrolls and carrying cards which ultimately determine their outcome as they literally ‘walk’ through situations that include pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. Participants are guided through the experience by trained facilitators (who read the script and assume the roles of European explorers and settlers) and Indigenous Elders or knowledge keepers. The exercise concludes with a debriefing\, conducted as a talking circle\, during which participants discuss the learning experience\, process their feelings\, ask questions\, share insights and deepen their understanding. \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nThe Bus Stop Theatre is located in Mi’kma’ki\, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. Mi’kmaw Peoples have lived and cared for this land\, which provides all our richness and wealth\, for over 13\,500 years. We are privileged to live and work on this land that we now call home.

SUMMARY:Sherman Downey Live at the Bus Stop Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Sherman’s radio-friendly brand of upbeat folk/pop has always appealed to a large demographic. After releasing his 2009 debut “Honey For Bees”\, Sherman took his engaging performances to stages ranging from the Vancouver Olympics to Australia’s Woodford Folk Festival\, earning international radio play. His highly anticipated second release “The Sun In Your Eyes”\, recorded with his band The Ambiguous Case\, was awarded MusicNL’s ‘Pop/Rock Recording of the Year’ and earned him Newfoundland and Labrador’s ‘SOCAN Songwriter of the Year’ distinction as well as an ECMA nomination for Group Recording of the Year. The album’s first single ‘Thick as Thieves’ won him CBC’s inaugural Searchlight Prize as Canada’s Best New Artist\, while increasing his profile as a touring act and garnering an even broader fan base. \nSherman’s latest venture zeroes in on the ordinary; the day to day. Whether it’s letting loose in a local dance hall\, people-watching from the front porch\, or playing with love in an out-of-the-way gas station – the songs on this album offer a thoughtful commentary on what it might be like to push beyond what is merely comfortable. The characters help the listener find solace in song. \nHorn-heavy with strings throughout\, Sherman’s latest release\, ’The New Beautiful’\, moves through moments of pure 70s nostalgia\, while at other times embraces the folk and country roots Sherman cut his teeth on. Fans of his first two albums will be happy to hear familiar character-driven songs\, but will no doubt notice a new musical exploration. Downey delves into straight-up keys-pop before switching into gritty up-close-and-personal meandering on parlour guitar or piano; strings and electric guitar sweep in to carry you giddily through the album. This collection of songs may very well be a response to the departure of Downey’s bandmates and to the new territory in which he finds himself; an answer to ‘Now what?’ and ‘What if?’. \nWhile in the studio\, producer Daniel Ledwell sat with Sherman to listen to an eclectic variety of musical samplings taken from each of their collections. From Rodriguez to Roxy Music\, Beirut to Billy Joel\, with Neil Young\, Wilco\, Jim Sullivan and Roger Miller thrown in the mix\, Downey moves enthusiastically into new sonic territory.  \nBuy Tickets Online

SUMMARY:Assassins
DESCRIPTION:Assassins lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States\, in a one-act historical “revusical” that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald\, writers\, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman\, bend the rules of time and space\, taking us on a nightmarish roller coaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet\, interact and inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream. \nIt’s frank\, comedic\, dark\, and utterly compelling. The cry of the disenfranchised rings true in our current political and social climate\, with characters ripped from history speaking truth to the despair so often felt in 2019. \nAs with all of our shows\, we are partnering with a non-profit organization to raise funds and awareness. For this production\, we’re delighted to support the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. An advocacy\, education and funding group\, they provide supports and resources to the citizens of Nova Scotia suffering with a wide variety of mental health issues. We want to bring attention to the work they do\, and the desperate need for advocacy and education surrounding mental health care. $1 from every ticket sold is guaranteed to the charity. The more money we can raise to cover costs before the show\, the more we can donate! \n**TICKETS NOW ON SALE** \n***Assassins Cast & Crew*** \nBooth: Andrew Chandler*\nGuiteau: Mike Chandler*\nZangara: Cat McCluskey\nByck: Ali House\nHinckley: Tyler Craig\nFromme: Sasha Paiken\nMoore: Laura Thornton\nCzologosz: Tris Healy\nGoldman/As Cast: Katelyn Barker\nHerold/As Cast: Jakob Creighton\nAssistant/As Cast: Sarah Smith\nThe Balladeer: Julia Topple\nThe Proprietor: Leigh Fitzner-LeBlanc \nProducer: Laura Thornton\nAssociate Producer & Production Manager: Olivia McGinn\nDirector & Choreographer: Ian Gilmore*\nMusical Director: Sarah Richardson\nStage Manager: Ricky Buchanan\nAssistant Stage Manager: Christine Fitzner-Leblanc\nAssistant Stage Manager: Ian Richards \nCostume Design: Hannah Burgos\nLight Design: Olivia McGinn\nMarketing Design: Sean Skerry\nProps Design & Construction: Ian Richards\nSet Design & Construction: Dutch Swindells\nSound Design: June Zinck* \n*Appearing courtesy of the Canadian Actors Equity Association.

SUMMARY:The Avengers Tragedy: A Play in a Day
DESCRIPTION:On June 22\, one of The Villain’s Theatre’s most popular traditions is returning in a new form – our summer play-in-a-day! If you’re not familiar with the idea\, this is where we take a script\, get together with a volunteer group of performers\, and within the course of a day we come up with tickle trunk costumes and cardboard props\, and create a script-in-hand-staging which is often ludicrous\, always funny\, and generally a blast for audience and performers alike. \nThe Villains Theatre is pleased to announce that this year’s Play-in-a-Day is a joint FUNDRAISER with The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op! Check it out and support two companies that strive to help both emerging and established Nova Scotian artists. \nThis year’s offering? \nSaturday June 22\, 8pm:\nThe year is 1602. Queen Elizabeth the first is disturbed about mysterious thunderstorms threatening the kingdom. She hires her master spy\, Sir Nicholas Fury\, and the court physician\, Doctor Stephen Strange\, to get to the bottom of it. Heroes\, villains\, curiosities\, and marvels come together in an epic battle spanning Europe and across to the New World. A school for gifted youngsters and their clairvoyant professor\, a fearless – and blind – mercenary\, even a familiar fantastic foursome all square off in the most ambitious crossover/staged reading of all time\, adapted by Dan Bray from the graphic novel ‘1602’ by Neil Gaiman… THE AVENGERS TRAGEDY! \nTickets are PWYC – to reserve\, e-transfer or email info@villainstheatre.com
