SUMMARY:Bus Stop Theatre Writer's Circle
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP (IT’S FREE):\nhttp://bit.do/writerscircle \nABOUT:\nThe Bus Stop Theatre Writer’s Circle (formerly the Bus Stop Theatre Playwrights Unit) is an open invite writer’s collective. We meet monthly to share writing and feedback. We aim to create an affirming\, nurturing space to support the vulnerable practice of sharing new writing. Join us once or come every month – we just ask that you sign up in advance because capacity is limited.\n\nTo date we have been a theatre/playwright focused group\, and that’s where most of our expertise is. We value cross-pollination and we invite writers from other disciplines to join us! Whether you want to dip your toes into playwriting or you want to get feedback on your poetry/screenplay/short story\, we’d love to have you.\n\nWe have resources to support artists working towards professional productions\, but we welcome all writers\, whether you identify as “professional” or not.\n\nThe BST Writer’s Circle is organized by producer Meg Hubley and coordinator Karen Gross.\n\nHOW IT WORKS:\nWe meet on the third Sunday of every month.\n\nAfter you sign up\, we’ll confirm your spot (and send you the Zoom link) a week before the session. We have space for ten people who want to share work plus five people who just want to listen and give feedback.\n\nSessions are about two hours long with a break halfway through and ten minutes per writer to share writing and hear feedback. We go over the details of how sessions run every time\, so don’t worry if it’s your first time joining us! You’re also welcome to email writerscircle@thebusstoptheatre.org with any questions.\n\nWe suggest bringing a maximum of two pages of writing to allow enough time for responses. Writers are encouraged to come to the session with a specific question or issue they’re working on and want feedback about. The facilitator can also offer reflection questions to the group.\n\nThis is a reciprocal exchange: sharing your feedback is as important as sharing your work.\n\nIf you’re new to the Writer’s Circle and you want to get a feel for the group before you share your writing\, or if you just don’t have work to share this month\, you’re welcome to attend as a listener.\n\nLogo by Colleen MacIsaac.

DESCRIPTION:This week Shahin Sayadi’s Asheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover returns to Kjipuktuk/Halifax\, Nova Scotia.\nOnelight Theatre’s 2018 hit will be presented in a special free virtual reading of Shahin Sayadi’s hit soon-to-be-published one-man show\, Asheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover.\nWritten and performed by Sayadi\, this compelling story will be live-streamed from the Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax’s north end.\nTo access this free live-streamed performance\, simply tune in to Onelight Theatre’s facebook page for the streaming.\n\n—\n\n\n“Sayadi is able to bring an entire world filled with different characters\, as he simply and seamlessly shifts between them….a tremendous performer”\n– Deanne Kearney\, Mooney on Theatre\n\nDeveloped under the artistic leadership of Shahin Sayadi\, Asheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover is the story of forbidden love\, a family divided by long-held secrets\, and a community trying to find balance between traditional ways and the modern world. The play culminates in a Zar exorcism ceremony\, intended to rid a young man of the “sickness” of his love for an outcast young woman\, that ultimately reveals a father’s long-buried secrets.\nAsheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover is set on the shores of the Persian Gulf in southern Iran where East African and Persian traditions have blended over time to produce unique cultural practices\, including the modern Zar rituals. The play explores how cultures and communities change over time: how traditions can be sustained from generation to generation and also how there can be sudden\, overnight cultural change.\nAsheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover premiered in 2018 at the Prismatic Arts Festival in Halifax\, and had its Ontario debut at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre in Toronto\, December 2018. DESCRIPTION:Launching a new initiative of the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op!! \nWe will be capturing the live performances of the selected artists and streaming it live on the 25th of September! We will stream on The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op page\, the Artist’s Pages and right here!\nThis allows the artists to still be seen by many eyes\, on many platforms!\nThis allows the artists to have access to the raw and edited content after their show!\n——-\nTHE ARTISTS:\nNat Chantel (NAT CHANTEL)\nThemes of home\, silence; containment and belonging recur in the body of my art. Through subtle movements and repeated actions\, I explore repercussions of contact and it’s relationship to being silenced\, with the intention to give space for connection and healing.\nAs an interdisciplinary artist\, my medium of expression changes\, yet\, the context remains familiar and focused on recalling voice. Trauma from the erasure of body and self\, and the conditions surrounding distortions in identity are addressed to show how communication alters and imprints our sense of self-worth.\n\nhttp://www.natchantel.com\ninstagram.com/nat.chantelle\n————\nERIANA WILLIS\nEriana was born and raised in Dartmouth Nova Scotia\, with strong family roots in North Preston where her love for singing began at the age of 7. Some of her performances include singing the National Anthem and the Black National Anthem (Lift Every Voice) for the Provincial Launch of African Heritage Month 2018\, the RCMP “H” division\, and the Viola Desmond $10 bill launch at the Black Cultural Centre.\nEriana has also played in numerous musical theatre productions including\, “The Wiz” (2016) at the Rebecca Cohn theatre “From Broadway With Love” (2017) in Las Vegas\, Nevada\, and “Descendents a Musical History Lesson” (2017) by Broadway in the H.O.O.D. Canada. Her most recent performances include singing for the Scotia’s Got Talent fundraiser in the summer of 2018. Eriana is in her second year at Dalhousie University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/454733191212217/videos/541533573225839\nIG: Eriana Willis\n———–\nMayumi Lashbrook\nMy main titles as a creator include: Co-Artistic Director\, Choreographer\, Dancer\, Dance Educator\, and Arts Administrator. Creatively\, I aim with my work to leave the audience with a rich and lasting experience that explores possibilities of beauty\, finite detail and raw elegance. I create as a means to find connection\, commonality and vulnerability in others. I’m most interested in movement that is fluid\, powerful\, delicate\, weighted\, intricate\, agile and impactful. I choose dance as my medium as I see it as a unique\, powerful and universal language. It speaks to the kinesthetic and somatic intelligence that all humans have. In the dance I explore\, I emphasize this inherent intelligence through the power of breath\, emotion\, thought and gaze. I offer movement language spoken by all that incites visceral and lasting internal sensations. I thrive in close physical proximity to access optimal internal intimacy; fourth wall breaking\, site-specific and film/camera. My current creative energy is focused on accessing my personal history as a means to find belonging and acceptance of self.\nFB/IG: mayumi.movement\nFB/IG: Aeris Körper\nwww.aeriskorper.com (website)\n———–\nMoneesha Bakshi\n“Misha” Bakshi is a bisexual indian performer for Stage\, Film\, and Voiceover. Originally from Tennessee\, Misha is currently a 4th year student at the Fountain School of Performing Arts\, where she studies Acting as part of her master plan to become a C-list celebrity. We’ve also raised another $141\,000 from generous individual donations during that time\, taking us VERY CLOSE to our goal in saving the Bus Stop Theatre! By June 1st\, we had raised $1\,101\,000 out of our $1\,210\,000 goal! \nIn order to minimize the amount of debt we’ll need to incur to make the purchase\, we’re asking all our fans for one last show of support in helping us close the gap before the July 30th purchase date. We’ve been overwhelmed by the show of support so far. \nWe raised an additional $25\,000 in just two weeks! How close can we get to the $109\,000 needed to make the purchase debt free? Every dollar not needed on debt repayment will be directly invested into our programs and services serving the community. \nACT NOW!\nSAVE YOUR FAV LITTLE THEATRE!

SUMMARY:Softly\, now: part concert. part memoir
DESCRIPTION:Softly\, now \nPart concert. Part memoir. \nThis world premiere features 2b’s artistic co-directors unplugged\, singing the soundtrack of their twenty-year friendship. \nIn Softly\, now\, Christian Barry (Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story) and Anthony Black (One Discordant Violin) tell a story about coming\, going\, love\, fear\, and the rising tide. \nFeaturing 2b’s trademark blend of humour\, headiness\, and heart\, and marking the first time the two friends have shared the stage\, this show strips away theatrics to expose two artists at the top of their game reliving the past and contending with an uncertain future. \nWarning: This show contains sea shanties. \nCo-created by Anthony Black and Christian Barry with David Gagnon Walker\nDirected by Judy Wensel \nBuy Tickets Online\n_____________________________________________\n2b wishes to acknowledge our role as settlers on this land and that this event is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Mi’kmaq territory. Particularly for this production centred around the playwrights’ own relationships to their home\, it is especially important to remember and recognize that we are on stolen land. \nThe Bus Stop Theatre is located in K’jipuktuk\, which is covered by The Treaties of Peace and Friendship. These Treaties officially continue to be in effect\, however settlers have repeatedly violated their terms. An immediate example of such is the case of the Alton Gas project\, which you can learn more about here: https://stopaltongas.wordpress.com/ \nThe Bus Stop is also located on Gottingen Street\, which has historically been the home of Black Nova Scotians. \nWe are incredibly grateful to be able to create and present in this space.\n_____________________________________________\nAccess 2b\nWant to see Softly\, now\, but can’t afford it right now? Find details about our Access 2b program here ( https://bit.ly/32algsu )\, supported by O’Regan’s. \n2b is a member of the Culture Access Pass program for newcomers to Canada. ( https://bit.ly/3bSQhpf ) \n2b newbie\nIf you bring a friend who has never seen a 2b show to Softly\, now\, you’ll both save 20% when you use the promo code 2bNEWBIE. \nThanks and acknowledgements\n2b gratefully acknowledges support from the city of Halifax\, Nova Scotia’s Department of Communities\, Culture\, and Heritage\, Arts Nova Scotia\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, Emera\, Office Interiors\, Cox & Palmer\, and Red Door Realty\, as well as our Emerging Artist Donor\, RBC.
