SUMMARY:Transfiguration Day
DESCRIPTION:Admission $12 ($14 includes download code\, for those living in the 21st century)\n\nTransfiguration Day is a project comprised of singer-songwriter Thomas McCallum\, singer Karis Tees\, and cellist / singer-songwriter Lydia Mainville. August 6th is celebrated as the Feast of the Transfiguration in the ancient calendar\, and it was on this date that the trio first performed together. Playing ethereal music steeped in tradition\, Transfiguration Day has recorded two songs at the Old Confidence Lodge in January\, 2017. A full-length album can be expected in the not-so-distant future. https://www.transfigurationday.com/\n\n\nLydia Mainville is a cellist\, singer-songwriter and fiddler’s daughter from Darling’s Island\, NB. At once an innovator and traditionalist\, she creates experimental folk music steeped in classical and celtic roots. Her delicate melodies float over soundscapes that ebb and flow like the tide. Lydia’s expressive sounds echo in concert halls\, farmer’s markets\, and living rooms across Canada. https://lydiamainville.bandcamp.com/\n\nKurtis Eugene performs in the great folk-blues tradition\, but also incorporates it to create strikingly modern music reminiscent of a marriage between Fleet Foxes and Radiohead. https://kurtiseugene.bandcamp.com/releases\n\nBlue Lobelia is the pseudonym of Rachel Bruch\, an innovative vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who uses loop pedal technology to weave a complex and beautiful web of sound. https://bluelobelia.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Mug
DESCRIPTION:The Mayworks Halifax Festival presents \nA New Play by In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association\nMay 6th  7pm \nMay 7th 2pm \nMay 7th 7pm \n\nMug revolves around the Mug Shots of three formerly incarcerated people – photographs that span collectively almost 50 years of being in conflict with oneself and the Justice System. When a photograph is captured we often refer to it as ‘taking’ the photograph. This process of taking is encapsulated by the taking of the mug shot. However\, when a person is convicted of committing an offence\, the process of taking involves much more. When a person is incarcerated\, the liberty of free movement is taken. The person’s clothes are taken. The ability to make many of their own decisions is taken. Through Mug\, four persons relive their past by offering their stories and invite us all to take the challenge of giving. \n Featuring performances by JRDN\n \n\nCast & Crew:\nCast: Craig Kelly\, Lance Perry\, Darren Tynes and JRDN\n\nDirected by Sobaz Benjamin\nWith assistance from: Liam Petite\, Jacob Sampson\, Michael Tennyson and Jordan Metro\n\nBiographies\n\nSobaz Benjamin\, Founder and Executive Director of In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association\, is an accomplished and recognized film-director\, as well as a community advocate\, youth mentor\, program facilitator and educator. SUMMARY:I was There
DESCRIPTION:The Mayworks Halifax Festival presents \nAn Audiovisual installation by Katie Toth and Mary-Dan Johnston\nFREE admission\n\nIt goes like this: the bank closes\, along with the grocery\, then the laundromat\, the club\, the pub\, the corner store where we bought popsicles and cartons of milk. The schools crumbled and were consolidated. Now\, standing on the same spot where I bought my first vodka cran\, underage\, there is thick gravel where years ago I felt linoleum\, softer\, sticking to the sole of my shoe.\nThe geography remains the same\, but the landscape changes\nI was there is an attempt to illuminate the psychogeography of a city that is often accused of being stuck in the past. This mixed-media installation combines photography\, oral history testimony and cartography to shed a light on what is lost in the process of gentrification.\n  \nLocation and Hours\nThis piece is presented in the lobby of The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op and can be experienced ahead or after any event presented at this location. I can also be experience between 10am and 4pm daily from May 8th to 10th. \nBiographies\nKatie Toth is an emerging audio artist and digital/audio journalist who has been published in VICE\, the Village Voice\, and NPR. Her first art piece\, which celebrated New York City’s public transit system\, was produced in collaboration with photographer Lara Atallah\, and displayed at The New York City Transit Museum’s community artist event Platform. \nMary-Dan Johnston is a writer\, researcher\, educator working at the intersections of the public and the private. Trained as an oral historian and qualitative researcher\, she is particularly interested in how the political economy of the Maritimes has shaped the embodied experiences of working people. Her writing has recently appeared in GUTS Canadian Feminist Magazine. Her art practice uses street photography to capture moments of tension and collaboration between individuals and the built environment. \n  \nPresented in partnership with the Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative and the StART Festival. \n \n

SUMMARY:Creative Arts Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Creative Arts Therapy \nLocation: The Bus Stop Theatre\nDate/time: Tuesday\, April 25th @ 6:30pm\nInstructor: Leena Alawaid\n \nLength of workshop: 1 HR\n\nThe creative arts therapy workshop is meant to introduce the basics of the therapeutic forms\, benefits\, accessibility an activities one can work with/on to improve their own practice and/or share with others. \nWorkshop Activities \n1) Blind-Folded Painting

\nThe idea is to play music and have the participants paint blindly. This will help in reducing anxiety and de-stressing the participant. The activity will allow the artist to paint without an expectation or worry. \n2) Emotion Wheel \nThis activity is very common in art therapy practice and most instructors approach it differently. I like to approach this by having everyone trace an outline of their bodies. The concept is to mix colour you feel express a part of what you are feeling recently in life. The closer to the core\, the more you feel it and the farther away from the core\, the less it is affecting you. The hope is that eventually the artist will stop over thinking the situation and begin to paint purely from emotion. \n\nAbout the Instructor\n\nLeena Alawaid was born and raised in Halifax\, Nova Scotia and got to pursue her artistic studies and explorations at NSCAD University.  After graduation in 2014\, her main focus was to try and bring forth the concept of Creative Arts Therapy and draw attention to the process in her community. Leena is currently working together with several organizations in the community\, including Ronald McDonald House and the IWK\, where she offers art sessions to the children as a form of healing. Growing up in Halifax she got to experience first hand how much of a tight knit community the city has and she is thrilled to join the team here as Associate Producer at StART Fest Halifax. \n\nIf you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out! \n\nCheers\, \n\nYalitsa Riden\n\nCo-Producer\n\nStART Festival

SUMMARY:Playable Moments
DESCRIPTION:Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre is holding a fundraising event called Playable Moments on Monday\, April 3 at 7:30 pm at The Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax. The admission price is $20. A cash bar will be open during the evening. \nPlaywrights Juanita Peters\, Ryan Griffiths and Charlie Rhindress are each preparing one to two pages of the beginning of a script. An ensemble of four actors will use the scripts provided as a starting point\, improvising its continuation. \nAudience members will have the chance to influence the twists and turns each script takes.\nFor an additional price of five dollars audience members can suggest lines or ideas which will go into the hat and drawn at random. With each new suggestion the actors will improvise a new part of the play\, steering them in unforeseen directions. With the help of a dramaturge to orchestrate among the script\, the actors\, and the audience\, we’ll see what playable moments emerge. \nTickets are for sale through the PARC web site www.playwrightsatlantic.ca for those who can use PayPal. To buy tickets by phone using Visa please call 902-423-5358 or toll free to 1-877-845-1341. Tickets will also be for sale at the door on the evening of the event.

In May 2014\, Izabelle had the honor of hosting the Éloizes as well as participating in the Cercle des créateurs des Éloizes\nwhere she had to compose a French song and had the chance to perform this song in front of a large room. It was after this performance that the desire to make an album in French came to\nhim. \nIn an innovative context\, Izabelle dares to create French music. With her joy\, she would like to inspire the young people of today to go and dream. With her life and career experiences\, her goal is always to share her passion with as many people as possible. \nThe singer-songwriter has been a member of the New Brunswick music scene for over 10 years and played over 1800+ shows during this period in Europe\, the United States and across Canada.

SUMMARY:(Re-fringed) Speaking In Tongues - African Nova Scotian Storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Friday Feb 17th – 6:30PM\nSaturday Feb 18th – 2:00PM & 7:00PM\n$15/$10 \n“Four noted storytellers will present a concert of African Nova Scotia tales taken from history (Birchtown Loyalists)\, family (Viola Desmond and family\, Halifax; Fraser family\, North Preston; Maxwell family\, Marble Mountain\, Cape Breton) and contemporary tales of Halifax (from Natal Day stories to even partying at the Derby Tavern in the 1980’s!). The emphasis is on humour but each tale will reveal important truths about Nova Scotia. In ‘The Iceman Cometh’ a story by Wanda Robson (the 89 year-old sister of Nova Scotia human rights icon Viola Desmond) set in the 1930’s\, a delivery man in the habit of delivering ice to Black families on Gottingen only at the end of the day run when the ice was bad prompts Robson’s father to buy the first refrigerator in the community. In ‘Natal Day’ North Preston storyteller Vetty Thomas hilariously describes the hundred year old tradition of Blacks from Preston attending the annual Dartmouth birthday celebration en masse (every man\, woman\, senior and child!) and how the tradition came to an abrupt end when the popular route ending at Lake Banook was changed by City officials in the 1990’s. There are also stories from around the province like the story of the Marble Mountain Maxwell’s: twin brothers who worked on fishing schooners on the Grand Banks in the late 1800’s (one of whom appeared as the Gaelic speaking cook in the famed Rudyard Kipling novel Captain’s Courageous). \nThe stories are true stories of events\, personalities and communities that are also declarations of pride and triumph in the often difficult racial climate of Nova Scotia…And they are as ‘Nova Scotian as the Bluenose’ declares David Woods- the show’s creator and one of its storytellers. Featured storytellers: Louise DeLisle (Shelburne)\, Wanda Robson (North Sydney)\, Nathan Simmons (East Preston)\, Vetty Thomas (North Preston)\, David Woods (Dartmouth). Musical accompaniment by Owen Lee. For the whole family…not to be missed.”
