SUMMARY:CFAT: Unlike like a hippopotamus\, a bird
DESCRIPTION:“Unlike like a hippopotamus\, a bird” an exhibition of video works from The Centre For Art Tapes Media Art Scholars 2022\n\nArtists Kit Holden-Ada\, Violet Pask\, Steph Rybczyn\, Rebecca Wolfe\, Rachel Bruch and Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott have attended intensive workshops\, mentorship and critiques that have led to the creation of six complex video works considering these connections and misalignments. Like the hippopotamus and a bird\, they are entangled into an intricate set of relations. The artists respond to these coilings\, carefully and contemplative\, defined by the weavings of technological representation.\n\nPlease join us for the exhibition opening on April 20th\, from 6PM-9PM. Additional viewing will be from April 21st\, from 10AM-7PM at the Bus Stop Theatre. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:Good Egg Theatre Company \nWRITTEN & PERFORMED BY: Katie Clarke \nDIRECTOR: Adri Vanos \nCan You Remember How We Got Here is a show about growing up—the kind of growing up that never stops. It’s about tennis courts\, and Halloween\, and a little red and yellow plastic car whose wheels rusted in the garden shed last winter. \nIt’s about bad sex and good love and bruises and wondering what words we would have for each other\, if we weren’t here\, in this place\, at this time. It’s about imagining queer utopia and finding yourself halfway there. \nNote: This performance features moments where the character is changing clothes in their bedroom and at one point will be shirtless with their back to the audience \n\n35 – 45 mins \nWed April 27th @ 7 : 15 pm \nThurs April 28th @ 6:00 pm \nFriday April 29th @ 9 : 15 pm \nSaturday April 30th @ 3 : 15 pm & 6:00 pm \nSunday May 1st @ 12:00 pm \n\n\n\n\nRegular Tickets l $15 Student / Senior l $12 Rainbow – PWYC l $ E-Ticket l $5

SUMMARY:The Work We Do: An Animation Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Live screening at The Bus Stop Theatre (2203 Gottingen St) \nONLINE TICKETS are on sale as of April 28th. Buy tickets \nMasking is required to attend this event in person \nPresented in partnership with the Animation Festival of Halifax (AFX) \nCraft. Labour. Practice. Drudgery. Vocation. We work every day\, sometimes with joy and a sense of fulfillment\, sometimes with loathing and a sense of alienation. We labour for pay\, for free\, or for barter; we exert ourselves for overlords\, for ourselves\, or for our communities. These animated films from across the country and across the decades reflect on the ups and downs of our experiences as beings who toil and strive. And what medium could be more fitting than the labour-intensive delight of animation?

Despite what route we are told we should follow\, we use shortcuts to find our own way. \nIn this piece\, audience members’ favourite shortcuts are collected\, processed\, illustrated\, published\, and distributed by a trio of workers who open up the inside of their factory to us so we can see every detail of this long process to take a short cut. \nShortcuts\, loopholes and life hacks. We want ‘em! \nSubmit your own tips on how to get ahead on May 6th between 3:00 PM and 7:00PM\, either in person or by calling 902-404-0616 \n \nTHE TEAM\nDan Bray – The Courier\nColleen MacIsaac – The Technician / Creator\nMahya Tench – The Operator \nDan Bray – The Courier \nDan Bray (he/him) is an interdisciplinary theatre and visual artist\, currently living as the winter caretaker of a spooky mansion just outside Antigonish. On spaceship earth\, energy is neither created nor destroyed\, it simply changes form. This is true for individuals that make up Superfluid Collective. Ranging from Bengali\, Iranian\, Pubjabi M’ikMa’ki\, English\, Irish and Canadian backgrounds\, the group has come together through a shared thirst for Olands and basement jams. The group’s experience of immigration is paralleled by their vagabond work ethic\, moving between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for shows. SUMMARY:Abortion to Abolition Book Launch and Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the in-person book launch and art opening for Abortion to Abolition by Martha Paynter\, illustrated by Julia Hutt. \n  \nAbout the book – https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/abortion-to-abolition \nThe history of abortion decriminalization and critical advocacy efforts to improve access in Canada deserve to be better known. Ordinary people persevered to make Canada the most progressive country in the world with respect to abortion care. But while abortion access is poorly understood\, so too are the persistent threats to reproductive justice in this country: sexual violence\, gun violence\, homophobia and transphobia\, criminalization of sex work\, reproductive oppression of Indigenous women and girls\, privatization of fertility health services\, and the racism and colonialism of policing and the prison system. This beautifully illustrated book tells the empowering true stories behind the struggles for reproductive justice in Canada\, celebrating past wins and revealing how prison abolitionism is key to the path forward. \n  \nAbout the author \nMartha Paynter is a registered nurse providing abortion and postpartum care in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. The founder and chair of Wellness Within: An Organization for Health and Justice\, and a doctoral candidate at the Dalhousie University School of Nursing\, Martha has 20 years of experience working to advance gender health equity. Her practice\, teaching and research focus on the intersection of reproductive health and the justice system. A frequent contributor to Briarpatch\, CBC\, the Coast\, the Conversation\, the Halifax Examiner\, and Saltwire\, Martha writes about publicly-funded health care\, prison abolition\, and gender equity. \n  \nAbout the artist \nJulia Hutt is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist residing in Kjipuktuk. Inspired by her own experience with pregnancy\, birthing and baby-raising\, Julia works with both traditional and digital illustration to create anecdotal scenes that portray snapshots of early parenthood. Her work challenges the capitalist devaluation of child rearing and traditionally gendered work. She produces work with Wellness Within and Martha Paynter to raise awareness about reproductive justice in the Canadian prison system.
