SUMMARY:HomeFirst Theatre presents The December Man by Colleen Murphy
DESCRIPTION:The December Man won the Governor General’s Award for Drama in 2007 and is inspired by one of the most tragic and significant incidents in our country’s history\, the École Polytechnique Massacre on Dec 6th\, 1989. Murphy’s play deals with the fate of a bystander who witnessed the event and could/did not act. The December Man is the story of how he and his family were tragically affected. For those of us who remember it vividly\, this play helps us to understand the terrible aftermath that still lives with us. For a generation that wasn’t born when it took place\, The December Man is a revelatory experience. With mass shootings on the rise and gender-based domestic violence at an all-time high during Covid-19\, this examination of ‘the bystander effect’ in The December Man is startlingly relevant to Nova Scotians and beyond. \nTickets: Regular $25.00\, Underwage/Accessible Price $15.00 \nTickets are being sold online until two hours before curtain\, and can be purchased here. SUMMARY:Spectacle de Mehdi Cayenne (Première Partie Denzel Subban)

SUMMARY:Tuesdays & Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Tragic love story | 16+ (touches on domestic violence) \nTuesdays & Sundays is a play inspired by the true story of William Millman and Mary Tuplin\, and the tragedy that shook the quiet community of Margate\, Prince Edward Island\, in 1887. Written by Canadian playwrights Daniel Arnold and Medina Hahn\, this critically-acclaimed play has toured extensively across Canada and internationally. Kitbag Theatre’s lauded\, sold out production at the Watermark Theatre in 2020 was the piece’s PEI premiere. \nWe first find William and Mary as blank slates. The young lovers recall\, one piece at a time\, their lives\, their home\, each other. We watch them rediscover their youthful love for each other\, relive their eager\, reckless courtship. Their sweet country romance\, however\, quickly takes a wrong turn. With each memory recalled\, the thread of their story begins to unravel\, quickly\, almost faster than they can keep up with. They can only watch and breathe as inevitability takes hold. \nStarring Island favourites Melissa MacKenzie and Jacob Hemphill\, and directed by Rebecca Parent\, Tuesdays & Sundays is a gripping piece of Island history\, expertly told for today’s audience. \n“This production of Tuesdays & Sundays is SUPERB. With an incredible script and two outstanding actors the story comes to life with their powerful\, deft characterizations and Rebecca Parent’s brilliant and creative direction. The piece flows and mesmerizes. You feel you are in the hands of master-storytellers from beginning to end. It is one of the best pieces of theatre I have seen in a long time.” – Jan Rudd\, theatre professional \n“Simply put\, Kitbag’s Tuesdays & Sundays is a performance too incredible to miss. A must-see.” – Hon. Dennis King\, Premier of PEI \n  \nRun Time 1 hour \n  \nTuesdays & Sundays: Official Trailer

SUMMARY:Midnight Baby
DESCRIPTION:Comedy \nMature audiences only CW: coarse language \nMidnight Baby is a stand-up comedy experience performed by comedian Justin Shaw. In this hour-long performance\, Shaw shares a collection of ridiculous (and painfully true) stories from his adolescence and how they shaped his worldview. As a comedian\, Shaw has performed all around Canada\, having worked with Scott Faulconbridge\, Lorne Elliott\, and Mike MacDonald. He has been featured on Yuk Yuks\, Nextfest\, and most recently the Hamilton Fringe Festival. Get ready to laugh and bear witness to the force of nature known as Midnight Baby!

SUMMARY:My First Heart Attack
DESCRIPTION:Comedy / Horror \nF bombs \nJane Kansas returns to the Halifax Fringe. She had a great debut a few years back\, with My Funeral : the dry run. That was followed by My Dead Dad : stories from the front yard\, two years ago. \nShe couldn’t make it last year because she was too busy having open heart surgery. Her heart attack ended up needing six hospital admissions and about 170 days in Dartmouth General and the QEII. Let her tell you all about it! In fact\, just try and stop her. My First Heart Attack is billed as a comedy / horror because some really\, really terrible things happened (just you wait until you hear about the Catheterization Lab) but those things are told with the usual Kansas humour. She’s not dead yet!

SUMMARY:Bus Stop Theatre Writer's Circle
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP (IT’S FREE):\nhttp://bit.do/writerscircle \nABOUT:\nThe Bus Stop Theatre Writer’s Circle (formerly the Bus Stop Theatre Playwrights Unit) is an open invite writer’s collective. We meet monthly to share writing and feedback. We aim to create an affirming\, nurturing space to support the vulnerable practice of sharing new writing. Join us once or come every month – we just ask that you sign up in advance because capacity is limited.\n\nTo date we have been a theatre/playwright focused group\, and that’s where most of our expertise is. We value cross-pollination and we invite writers from other disciplines to join us! Whether you want to dip your toes into playwriting or you want to get feedback on your poetry/screenplay/short story\, we’d love to have you.\n\nWe have resources to support artists working towards professional productions\, but we welcome all writers\, whether you identify as “professional” or not.\n\nThe BST Writer’s Circle is organized by producer Meg Hubley and coordinator Karen Gross.\n\nHOW IT WORKS:\nWe meet on the third Sunday of every month.\n\nAfter you sign up\, we’ll confirm your spot (and send you the Zoom link) a week before the session. We have space for ten people who want to share work plus five people who just want to listen and give feedback.\n\nSessions are about two hours long with a break halfway through and ten minutes per writer to share writing and hear feedback. We go over the details of how sessions run every time\, so don’t worry if it’s your first time joining us! You’re also welcome to email writerscircle@thebusstoptheatre.org with any questions.\n\nWe suggest bringing a maximum of two pages of writing to allow enough time for responses. Writers are encouraged to come to the session with a specific question or issue they’re working on and want feedback about. The facilitator can also offer reflection questions to the group.\n\nThis is a reciprocal exchange: sharing your feedback is as important as sharing your work.\n\nIf you’re new to the Writer’s Circle and you want to get a feel for the group before you share your writing\, or if you just don’t have work to share this month\, you’re welcome to attend as a listener.\n\nLogo by Colleen MacIsaac.

The play culminates in a Zar exorcism ceremony\, intended to rid a young man of the “sickness” of his love for an outcast young woman\, that ultimately reveals a father’s long-buried secrets.\nAsheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover is set on the shores of the Persian Gulf in southern Iran where East African and Persian traditions have blended over time to produce unique cultural practices\, including the modern Zar rituals. The play explores how cultures and communities change over time: how traditions can be sustained from generation to generation and also how there can be sudden\, overnight cultural change.\nAsheq: Ritual Music to Cure a Lover premiered in 2018 at the Prismatic Arts Festival in Halifax\, and had its Ontario debut at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre in Toronto\, December 2018.
