SUMMARY:As You Are\, Return to the Forgotten Land
DESCRIPTION:As you are\, return to the forgotten land \nThe spiritual dance-rock soul medicine experience \n\nTangled up in our robes of limiting beliefs and ancestral trauma\, saturated energetically with a collective anxiety and impending gloom\, it is a challenge in 2022 to remember who we truly are: boundless beings within whom every conceivable miracle of the universe has the potential to echo. \n\nIt is time to return to that forgotten land and singer-songwriter-poet\, Jont along with the Heartland Family – a group of close friends who synchronicitously fell into creating this high-energy\, at times reflective at times cathartic hybrid electronic music show featuring a string quartet and a full choir – are the people who have come to take you there. They present it for the first time at the Bus Stop Theatre on Thursday August 11\, 2022. \n\nAll risers will be out – the floor will be an open-flow space to encounter the music\, cast of characters and for moving and dancing. Outlandish and expressive costumes that invite you to be fully present asyouare are encouraged! A refreshing dry bar will serve warm cacao\, sparkling waters and kombucha on tap. \n\nTicket holders are invited to join the after-party. After the 2-hour show the theatre will remain open and the energy will continue to expand into an aftershow celebration featuring Heartland DJ sets\, dancing and other spontaneous delights.  You will leave feeling fully alive – plugged back into the magical electrical socket of the Universe – invigorated\, and connected to the essence of who you really are and why and how you want to share your unique expression with the world. \n\nDATE \nThursday August 11\, 2022 \n  \nTIME \nDoors open 7:15 pm. Show starts at 8 pm. DJ Aftershow follows. \n\nTICKETS \n100 tickets available \nEarly Bird $40. SUMMARY:The Skeleton Dance
DESCRIPTION:The Skeleton Dance is a creative movement show for all ages about death. It is a highly physical\, energetic\, and light-hearted play with elements of clown and puppetry. It is created and performed by Emma James (they/she) and Ella MacDonald (she/her). It runs approximately 30 minutes\, invites structured audience participation\, and is always followed by a meet-and-greet or talk back. The show is absolutely free to attend due to the generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts. \nIn The Skeleton Dance\, two young children process the news that their Great Uncle Trout has suddenly passed away. They consider the implications of this in an entertaining\, irreverent way\, where the audience is privy to their many whimsical theories about death. Though the hardship of the Covid-19 Pandemic\, Emma & Ella believe that everyone has grieved something\, be it a loved one\, important events\, or normalcy. The goal of The Skeleton Dance is to provoke thought about the ways in which we respond to hardship and comfort one another. \nJoin us at either 4:30pm or 7:30pm on August 8th at the Bus Stop Theatre. \n

SUMMARY:The Burning Hell: "Garbage Island" Album Release Party

SUMMARY:Book Launch: The Summer Between Us by Andre Fenton
DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 27th from 7-9pm for the book launch of Andre Fenton’s latest novel\, The Summer Between Us. \nThis coming-of-age story follows eighteen-year-old Adrian Carter as he graduates from high school and confronts difficult decisions about his future\, all while dealing with the stress and pressure he feels to please those closest to him. As Adrian navigates the emotional highs and lows of the summer between graduation and the post-secondary future\, he negotiates the difficulties of forging a path in life against others’ expectations. \nDespite his wish to follow his long time girlfriend Mel on her cross-country trip with her band\, Adrian is hesitant about spending too much time in the punk’s scenes majority-white spaces. Adrian struggles with these feelings and works to find common ground with his emotionally distant father. Meanwhile he starts to understand that his own passion is grounded in a desire to support a community he’s forged on his own. \nDealing with important themes (a desire for independence\, identity\, first love\, familial tensions) from the nuanced perspective of a biracial teen\, this story tackles key contemporary social issues. Class differences\, colourism in the Black community and the structural barriers limiting access to post-secondary education for Black youth are all embedded in Andre Fenton’s readable narrative. \nAndre Fenton is an award-winning young adult author\, spoken word artist\, and arts educator. He has written two previous novels\, Worthy of Love and ANNAKA. Andre’s work focuses on race\, self-esteem and creating more representation and diversity in young adult fiction. \nThe evening will in conversation with Andre Fenton along with award-winning middle grade author\, Chad Lucas as they discuss some of the topics in the book: Masculinity\, eating disorders\, diversity in fiction\, and much more. \nWe recommend that guests wear masks for this event.

SUMMARY:Taboo No More - Drug Buds Live Podcast Recording and Storytelling Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live Drug Buds podcast recording featuring Heath from Get Sensible and CSSDP & Justin from the Halifax Psychedelic Society\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThis event is co-hosted by the Halifax Psychedelic Society & Get Sensible (A program by Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy – CSSDP). This is a 2 part event:\n\nPart 1: Podcast with Q&A- Listen to Heath from CSSDP’s Get Sensible and Justin from the Halifax Psychedelic Society talk about the emerging medicalization of psychedelics. They will draw from successes and failures of the medical cannabis movement\, as we navigate the path forward with psychedelics. The discussion will be followed by a question & answer period.\n\nPart 2: Storytelling- This will be an opportunity for audience members to come up on stage and share a story of their own. We recognize the stigma surrounding substance use\, and know that healing can come through sharing our experiences. In order to build better drug policies\, hearing stories from the community is essential. More details/parameters for story telling will be shared at the event\, and people can sign up during the break after\n\nPart 1.- We know that sharing about substance use can be vulnerable\, and possibly triggering for listeners. We will have some folks at the event who can be available to hold space if anyone needs a listening ear or a safer space to get grounded. This will be in the theatre lobby\, away from the stage/audience.\n\nTo learn more about the Hosts visit: Getsensible.orgCSSDP.orgHalifaxpsychedelicsociety.com

SUMMARY:Abortion to Abolition Book Launch and Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the in-person book launch and art opening for Abortion to Abolition by Martha Paynter\, illustrated by Julia Hutt. \n  \nAbout the book – https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/abortion-to-abolition \nThe history of abortion decriminalization and critical advocacy efforts to improve access in Canada deserve to be better known. Ordinary people persevered to make Canada the most progressive country in the world with respect to abortion care. But while abortion access is poorly understood\, so too are the persistent threats to reproductive justice in this country: sexual violence\, gun violence\, homophobia and transphobia\, criminalization of sex work\, reproductive oppression of Indigenous women and girls\, privatization of fertility health services\, and the racism and colonialism of policing and the prison system. This beautifully illustrated book tells the empowering true stories behind the struggles for reproductive justice in Canada\, celebrating past wins and revealing how prison abolitionism is key to the path forward. \n  \nAbout the author \nMartha Paynter is a registered nurse providing abortion and postpartum care in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. The founder and chair of Wellness Within: An Organization for Health and Justice\, and a doctoral candidate at the Dalhousie University School of Nursing\, Martha has 20 years of experience working to advance gender health equity. Her practice\, teaching and research focus on the intersection of reproductive health and the justice system. A frequent contributor to Briarpatch\, CBC\, the Coast\, the Conversation\, the Halifax Examiner\, and Saltwire\, Martha writes about publicly-funded health care\, prison abolition\, and gender equity. \n  \nAbout the artist \nJulia Hutt is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist residing in Kjipuktuk. Inspired by her own experience with pregnancy\, birthing and baby-raising\, Julia works with both traditional and digital illustration to create anecdotal scenes that portray snapshots of early parenthood. Her work challenges the capitalist devaluation of child rearing and traditionally gendered work. She produces work with Wellness Within and Martha Paynter to raise awareness about reproductive justice in the Canadian prison system.
