SUMMARY:Atlantic Boylesque presents Eros & Thanatos: A Legendary Revue of Ancient Grease
DESCRIPTION:Love is complicated. In an effort to bring some clarity to this most complex of emotions\, Atlantic Boylesque has done a deep dive into ancient Greek literature. For starters\, we learned that Eros is the primordial winged god of love and sex. One of the first gods\, Eros\, was son to Nyx (goddess of night) and had no father. He was both worshipped by a fertility cult and considered a patron of homosexual love. Like Eros\, Thanatos is also a son of Nyx (goddess of night). While his brother brings love and desire into the world\, Thanatos is the very personification of Death. He carries into the underworld those that have experienced a “gentle death”. \nSigmund Freud believed humans have a life instinct (named “Eros”) and a death drive (named “Thanatos”). While Eros drives us to create life\, Thanatos tempts us to play with danger\, take risks and engage in self-destructive behaviour. \nThis Valentine’s Day weekend (Feb. 11th)\, join Atlantic Boylesque as we explore love\, lust\, laughter\, danger\, desire and doom. While love can be the fountain of everything good in life it can also be a source of pain\, jealousy\, vengeance\, and death of self. \nJoin us for Eros & Thanatos: A Legendary Revue of Ancient Grease.  \nEarly show: 5-7pm \nLate show: 9-11pm

SUMMARY:Live Art Dance presents m/Other
DESCRIPTION:m/Other is a duet for mother and son. The dance is simple and challenging: together naked we touch each other and try to “not-feel”. The duration of the dance is the length of a symphony. We hope the work stages many values and questions: The importance of time as a substance\, the value of an aged body on stage\, the psychic capability to hold one another. Most basically it is an opportunity for a mother and a son to give each other time and attention. \nCreators and performers: Benjamin Kamino & Gabby Kamino \nGeneral Seating\n$25.00 Adults; $22.50 Seniors; $15.00 Students / Arts Worker / Under Waged \nRunning time 55 minutes \n*Content warning: Nudity

SUMMARY:JRG Society for the Arts Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of 2021’s inaugural Disability Atlantic Arts Symposium\, The JRG Society for the Arts is thrilled to once again partner with Theatre New Brunswick to bring you an accessible evening of entertainment and community-building. \nHosted by Brian George\, this event will feature a lineup of artists who identify as Disabled and have a wide variety of practices. Come for the drag and the drama\, but stay for the comedy\, poetry\, live painting\, and so much more! Performers announcing soon. Tickets by donation. \n\n[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: In the upper left corner\, there is an orange logo that contains a camera aperture\, eighth note\, pencil\, and paintbrush in a small circle. Overlaid over this logo is black text that reads: “JRG Society for the Arts.” In the lower right corner is large white text that reads: “2023 JRG Cabaret. February 20\, 2023. The Bus Stop Theatre. Halifax\, NS.” All of this is on a white and hot pink background\, with the two colours broken up by wavy lines of bright yellow and blue.]

SUMMARY:Mayworks presents: Djata - Conversations of the Manden
DESCRIPTION:By Aly Keita\nPresented in partnership with Prismatic Arts Festival in association with Live Art Dance\n \n \nFriday\, May 5th @ 7:00pm\nSaturday\, May 6th @ 7:00pm \nWith opening performance of Unfold by Reequal Smith \nLocation: Bus Stop Theatre Co-op (2203 Gottingen St) \nDuration:\nUnfold by Reequal Smith – 10 mins\nDjata: Conversations of the Manden by Aly Keita – 20 mins\n(15 mins intermission between performances) \nTickets: $5/$10/$15/$20 (For both shows) \nBUY TICKETS HERE\n \nTo create my piece\, I drew inspiration from the Epic of Soundjata\, one of the most significant foundational stories from 13th-century African oral tradition. It features Soundjata Keita\, whose exploits have been transmitted through song and kora music played by lyrical poets from West Africa\, known as griots. I was especially interested in the part of the legend known as “The Awakening of the Lion” to address themes of oppression\, courage\, metamorphosis\, passage and liberation\, all explored through rhythm\, sound and movement. \nBorn from an alliance between the buffalo and the lion\, Soundjata Keita\, the long-awaited child whose birth was foretold by soothsayers\, is unable to walk. After years of humiliation\, against all odds\, he stands up\, walks across the village and uproots a baobab. This marks the beginning of his awakening\, which will lead him to found the great Mandingo Empire\, unifying the regions of West Africa\, including Guinea\, my home country.

SUMMARY:Mayworks presents A More Radiant Sphere
DESCRIPTION:By Sara Wylie\nPresented in partnership with Carbon Arc Cinema\n \nThursday\, May 18th @ 6:30pm \nLocation: Bus Stop Theatre Co-op (2203 Gottingen St) \nDuration: 40 mins followed by a 30 mins Q&A with filmmaker Sara Wylie moderated by MLA Gary Burrill \nTickets: $5/$10/$15 \nBUY TICKETS HERE\n \n[CC] This film will be closed captioned. \nA mid-length hybrid documentary about Joe Wallace: Canadian Communist poet\, political prisoner\, and the filmmaker’’s long lost family member. Shot on 16mm and digital\, featuring original songs by award-winning musician Fiver/Simone Schmidt. \n“Poetry is of a higher order. It sets bells ringing in the mind of the reader so that he makes his own music …” \n \nNearly lost in the annals of Canadian history\, the writings of Joe Wallace—radical believer in socialist ideals\, writer of anti-capitalist verses\, and survivor of detainment by the Canadian government—have been revived by his great-great-niece\, director Sara Wylie. \nSearching through library archives\, family records\, and footage from the early decades of the Canadian settler state\, Wylie assembles the story of Wallace the poet and revolutionary. “The more I began looking for him\, the more I began to see parts of myself reflected\,” she says. His poems are spirited\, forthright and folksy; they recall a time of great political change and opportunity. \nInextricable from Wallace’s life and work is the history of Canada’s labour movement and the increasing involvement of the state in its disruption. A More Radiant Sphere captures a time and a feeling at risk of being erased by Canadian myth\, when the possibility of a world beyond capitalism surged forth into poetry. (Written by Sarah Bakke) \nThe film will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Sara Wylie moderated by Gary Burril\, MLA for Halifax Chebucto \n \nFilm Credits: \nDirected\, produced and written by Sara Wylie\nFeaturing Bruce Wallace \nMusic by Simone Schmidt\nWith Nick Dourado on piano\nNathan Doucet on percussion\nJohn Showman on fiddle \nCinematography by Suz Friesen and Sara Wylie\nSound recording by Kellen Jackson and Sara Wylie\nSound mix/edit by Michelle Hwu and Tim Atkins\nColour by Sam Gilling
