SUMMARY:Book Launch: Orphan Dreams
DESCRIPTION:One of Bus Stop Theatre’s own writer’s circle members has a new book out. \nCutting through the cacophony of language sure is hard for Elalarn after only speaking Folk her whole life. A princess on the run\, Elalarn must leave her home and everything she’s ever known behind and dive into a new world in search of her heritage. Together with her strange new foster family\, she searches for her origins\, but is it wise to look into her hidden past? \nThe book uses dyslexia friendly font and features just a hint of local flare in the photography used in the cover design. This is the second book in a planned series. \nContinuing from the events in Pauper Princess\, many of Orphan Dreams revisions were workshopped at the Bus Stop Theatre writers’ circle. Originally from Dartmouth\, Georgina now lives in Halifax with her husband\, baby\, and pets. Finding time for writing as a new mother has been difficult\, but thanks to the group’s encouragement and motivation\, she was able to complete her manuscript. \nPlease come out to celebrate the launch of Orphan Dreams at the Bus Stop Theatre on Thursday January 30th. Doors open at 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:"Slovo" House. Unfinished Novel screening
DESCRIPTION:1927. Artists are settled into one building. They are allowed to choose the finest apartments. All the amenities are provided: telephones\, heating\, and even a solarium on the roof. They are being listened to\, but they don’t know it. Eventually\, of the 66 apartments\, only 16 remain inhabited. The other residents are arrested\, executed\, or exiled to camps. \nSounds like the plot of a gripping psychological thriller\, doesn’t it? The only difference is that this really happened – in Kharkiv.\nIn the 1920s\, the city became a hub of Ukrainian culture\, attracting the most talented artists from across the country. And not just artists. Kharkiv wasn’t prepared for such an influx\, leaving many newcomers asking: where will we live? \nOstap Vyshnia\, one of the local writers\, proposed building a house for writers and even petitioned Stalin for funding. Unexpectedly\, he succeeded. The building was designed in the shape of the letter “C” for Slovo (Word; Cyrilic “C” sounds the same way as “S”). Soon\, it became home to luminaries like Les Kurbas\, Mykola Khvyloviy\, Pavlo Tychyna\, Volodymyr Sosiura\, Mike Johansen\, Ostap Vyshnia himself\, and others. \nWithin a few years\, Mykola Khvylovy\, a former communist\, grew disillusioned with the regime and took his own life in his apartment. Eleven other residents of the building were executed in Sandarmokh in 1937. In March 2022\, this building was damaged by a russian shell. \nThe feature film “Slovo” House. Unfinished Novel” tells the story of Ukrainian artists who lived in this building – how they lived\, wrote\, and formed friendships. The film is shot in black and white to better capture the spirit of the time. Despite the seemingly ideal conditions for creativity\, the artists lived under strict constraints\, and those who dared to step beyond them faced punishment. Interestingly\, the film contains a single color scene. Punishment\, however\, didn’t always mean camps or death; sometimes\, it meant coercion to collaborate with evil forces\, as happened with Pavlo Tychyna. \nJoin us for a screening of “Slovo” House. Unfinished Novel in Halifax.\n📅 When: February 1 at 5:00 PM (doors open at 4:40 PM)\n📍 Where: Bus Stop Theatre Co-op\n2203 Gottingen St.\, Halifax\n💸 Price: 20 CAD (Buy on Eventbrite) \nKinotoloka Halifax is a community initiative that brings people together through screenings of Ukrainian films and cultural exchange. Our goal is to spread awareness of Ukrainian cinema and amplify Ukrainian narratives to counter Russian propaganda. If you resonate with our mission\, please share this post\, tell your Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian friends about us\, and invite them to the screening. Let’s remember our history.

SUMMARY:Traasadi
DESCRIPTION:Traasadi – A Story of Love\, Loss\, and Liberation \nKalaa presents Traasadi by renowned playwright Manav Kaul\, the first-ever Hindi play to be staged in Halifax. Directed by Archana Manmohan and performed by Prateek Dhar\, this one-man play dives deep into the emotional journey of a son grappling with his memories of a mother who lived life on her own terms. The word “Traasadi” translates to “tragedy” in Hindi\, perfectly encapsulating the poignant exploration of familial relationships and personal turmoil. \nFalling within the genre of introspective drama\, Traasadi is a compelling narrative that examines universal themes of familial conflict\, identity\, and the lasting impact of choices. With its seamless blend of powerful storytelling and evocative visuals\, this production invites audiences to reflect on the bonds that shape us and the sacrifices that define freedom. \nDon’t miss this groundbreaking performance that brings Indian theatre to the heart of Halifax.

SUMMARY:OMOTE (⾯)
DESCRIPTION:Omote (面) is co-creation between Vancouver dance artist\, Shion Skye Carter and Halifax mask maker\, Miya Turnbull. By choreographing with hand-crafted papier-mâché masks of each of their faces\, coming in myriad shapes and facial expressions\, the artists explore their mixed Japanese Canadian heritage\, collating and contrasting their personal experiences\, while evoking the ritualistic nature of Japanese traditions such as the tea ceremony.\n\nThis performance challenges traditional ideas of beauty\, while gestures and tableau articulate the Japanese concept of ‘honne’ (a person’s true feelings) and ‘tatemae’ (their public face). Omote (面) translates to both ‘surface/face’ and ‘mask’\, and explores multitudes of layers of being and the self\, manipulating what is revealed and what is hidden\, honing in on the churning\, transitory nature of identity.

SUMMARY:Autobiographical Fiction & Improv for Storytelling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:March 4th at 4:30pm-7:30pm – Improv for Storytelling Workshop – $30 (includes admission to the show afterwards)\n\nWHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP BE ABOUT?\nYou’ve seen Autobiographical Fiction at the Fringe Festival and you want to try your hand at this groundbreaking format? You’re an improviser looking to add a couple of things to your yes-and toolbelt? You’re an international spy with sensitive military secrets on the run from the government and you need to lay low for a few hours? We got just the thing! \nLogan Robins and Olivier Blais are hosting a special\, one time only workshop at the Bus Stop Theatre dissecting the format for their show. In this workshop\, they will lead you through helpful creative exercises\, discuss the strategies and difficulties of doing a solo improvised show and guide you through performing a small\, shortened version of the show. By the end of this workshop\, you’ll know how our brains work when we sweat on stage: which is great because a workshop ticket also gets you a ticket to the show! What a steal! \nThrough different creative exercises we will explore focus\, connectivity\, world building\, storytelling and more. Because of the limited class size we look forward to meeting each participant where they are at to help them build skills\, confidence\, and to have FUN! Space is extremely limited- so don’t delay! \nSHOULD I BRING ANYTHING?\nPlease wear clothing that you are comfortable moving around in and bring a reusable water bottle\, lunch/snacks\, and a playful spirit! \n\n\nMarch 4th at 8pm – Autobiographical Fiction – $12 students/seniors/artist/underwaged & $20 general admission \nThe snow is melting\, the groundhog is sunbathing\, and spring is just around the corner… and so is the dreaded spring cleaning! But this dreary task is a lot more fun with the Unnatural Disaster Theatre Co’s “Autobiographical Fiction” featuring Logan Robins & Olivier Blais! \nWHAT IS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FICTION?\n\nAutobiographical Fiction is an entirely improvised solo show created by the audience (including you)! Before each of the two acts begin the audience will have a chance to fill the stage with a wide array of costumes and props while also filling out sticky notes with prompts\, lines\, song recommendations\, and more! This is a chance to be creative\, collaborative\, and a little silly as you unleash your inner playwright/director/set designer/sound designer/costume designer! \n*Audience participation is never mandatory. You’re safe. We promise… \nSHOULD I BRING ANYTHING? \nAs a matter of fact… Yes (if you’d like to)!! It is the perfect time for Spring Cleaning! \nWhile we will provide sticky notes and writing utensils (and some props/set) we would love you to bring something from home that you would like to donate (great way to start clearing that messy attic or garage)! Whether it be a winter-coat you’ve outgrown or a coffee table that has never quite worked in your living room\, we are accepting donations of any non-perishable item which will be used in the show and then cleaned\, delivered\, and donated by UDTCo. to Out of the Cold Community Association (and other charitable organizations). \n\nThat’s right! You can clear some much needed space in the house\, get a head start on spring cleaning\, while contributing to Autobiographical Fiction and a great cause (talk about a win/win/win\, huh?)!
