SUMMARY:Traasadi - Encore Performance
DESCRIPTION:🎭 Traasadi – A Story of Love\, Loss\, and Liberation returns for an encore performance! \nAfter a sold-out show and an overwhelming response\, Traasadi is back for one more night in Halifax!\nKalaa presents Traasadi by renowned playwright Manav Kaul\, the first-ever Hindi play staged in Halifax. Directed by Archana Manmohan and performed by Prateek Dhar\, this one-man play dives deep into the emotional journey of a son grappling with his memories of a mother who lived life on her own terms. The word Traasadi translates to tragedy in Hindi\, perfectly encapsulating this poignant exploration of familial relationships and personal turmoil. \nFalling within the genre of introspective drama\, Traasadi examines universal themes of conflict\, identity\, and the lasting impact of choices. With its seamless blend of powerful storytelling and evocative visuals\, this production invites audiences to reflect on the bonds that shape us and the sacrifices that define freedom.

SUMMARY:OMOTE (⾯)
DESCRIPTION:Omote (面) is co-creation between Vancouver dance artist\, Shion Skye Carter and Halifax mask maker\, Miya Turnbull. By choreographing with hand-crafted papier-mâché masks of each of their faces\, coming in myriad shapes and facial expressions\, the artists explore their mixed Japanese Canadian heritage\, collating and contrasting their personal experiences\, while evoking the ritualistic nature of Japanese traditions such as the tea ceremony.\n\nThis performance challenges traditional ideas of beauty\, while gestures and tableau articulate the Japanese concept of ‘honne’ (a person’s true feelings) and ‘tatemae’ (their public face). Omote (面) translates to both ‘surface/face’ and ‘mask’\, and explores multitudes of layers of being and the self\, manipulating what is revealed and what is hidden\, honing in on the churning\, transitory nature of identity.

SUMMARY:Autobiographical Fiction & Improv for Storytelling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:March 4th at 4:30pm-7:30pm – Improv for Storytelling Workshop – $30 (includes admission to the show afterwards)\n\nWHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP BE ABOUT?\nYou’ve seen Autobiographical Fiction at the Fringe Festival and you want to try your hand at this groundbreaking format? You’re an improviser looking to add a couple of things to your yes-and toolbelt? You’re an international spy with sensitive military secrets on the run from the government and you need to lay low for a few hours? We got just the thing! \nLogan Robins and Olivier Blais are hosting a special\, one time only workshop at the Bus Stop Theatre dissecting the format for their show. In this workshop\, they will lead you through helpful creative exercises\, discuss the strategies and difficulties of doing a solo improvised show and guide you through performing a small\, shortened version of the show. By the end of this workshop\, you’ll know how our brains work when we sweat on stage: which is great because a workshop ticket also gets you a ticket to the show! What a steal! \nThrough different creative exercises we will explore focus\, connectivity\, world building\, storytelling and more. Because of the limited class size we look forward to meeting each participant where they are at to help them build skills\, confidence\, and to have FUN! Space is extremely limited- so don’t delay! \nSHOULD I BRING ANYTHING?\nPlease wear clothing that you are comfortable moving around in and bring a reusable water bottle\, lunch/snacks\, and a playful spirit! \n\n\nMarch 4th at 8pm – Autobiographical Fiction – $12 students/seniors/artist/underwaged & $20 general admission \nThe snow is melting\, the groundhog is sunbathing\, and spring is just around the corner… and so is the dreaded spring cleaning! But this dreary task is a lot more fun with the Unnatural Disaster Theatre Co’s “Autobiographical Fiction” featuring Logan Robins & Olivier Blais! \nWHAT IS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FICTION?\n\nAutobiographical Fiction is an entirely improvised solo show created by the audience (including you)! Before each of the two acts begin the audience will have a chance to fill the stage with a wide array of costumes and props while also filling out sticky notes with prompts\, lines\, song recommendations\, and more! This is a chance to be creative\, collaborative\, and a little silly as you unleash your inner playwright/director/set designer/sound designer/costume designer! \n*Audience participation is never mandatory. You’re safe. We promise… \nSHOULD I BRING ANYTHING? \nAs a matter of fact… Yes (if you’d like to)!! It is the perfect time for Spring Cleaning! \nWhile we will provide sticky notes and writing utensils (and some props/set) we would love you to bring something from home that you would like to donate (great way to start clearing that messy attic or garage)! Whether it be a winter-coat you’ve outgrown or a coffee table that has never quite worked in your living room\, we are accepting donations of any non-perishable item which will be used in the show and then cleaned\, delivered\, and donated by UDTCo. to Out of the Cold Community Association (and other charitable organizations). \n\nThat’s right! You can clear some much needed space in the house\, get a head start on spring cleaning\, while contributing to Autobiographical Fiction and a great cause (talk about a win/win/win\, huh?)!

SUMMARY:Abstract: A Sci-Clown Show
DESCRIPTION:This is sci-comm like you’ve never seen it! Two clowns (Sphagnum & Professor Moss) have very different communication styles which lead to theatrical chaos as they present a lecture on Asian Elephants. In this hilarious all ages performance- science and theatre are fused together to explore artistic expressions of scientific data- all using an old school overhead projector. This is a work-in-progress showcase of this new piece of environmental theatre by Logan Robins with support from the Creature Conserve Mentorship Program and support from Arts Nova Scotia”.

Join us as we explore how farmers’ markets can be leveraged as powerful tools for change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nEvent lasts 2 hours 30 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome join us at the Bus Stop Theatre for an immersive talk by Justin Cantafio\, a 2023 Nuffield Scholar\, local food systems advocate\, and farmers’ market champion. \nCanada’s food system is in crisis—but there’s hope. SUMMARY:Making Space: Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:“Art spaces are really what define a city\, a community and build that sense of belonging and ownership” \nSebastien Labelle\, Former Executive Director of the Bus Stop Theatre \nHalifax is a rapidly changing city where space is increasingly unaffordable and unavailable. This feature length documentary follows the stories of three art spaces – The Waiting Room\, 1588 Barrington (The Khyber\, The Turret)\, and the Bus Stop Theatre. Tracing their fragility against wider forces of change in the city\, it highlights the perseverance required to create and protect these essential spaces. \nThe Director Gareth Wasylynko is a videographer and former city planner interested in how cities change.

SUMMARY:Mayworks
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Mayworks Festival of Working People & the Arts is packed with events to fuel you up with energy\, connection\, and critical reflections that will help carve a path toward a better world! \nThe festival kicks off on May Day with the hosts of Sandy & Nora Talk Politics recording their top charting podcast before a live audience. They will be accompanied by live music performed by Palestinian-Canadian pianist John Kameel Farah. \nHot on the heels of the festival opener is an all-star hip hop concert featuring Wiki\, an icon of New York’s City’s rap underground. He’ll be sharing the stage with Brooklyn’s Lord Unknown and local legends DJ Uncle Fester and Tachichi. \nWe’re partnering with the Atlantic International Film Festival for a one-night only screening of “Union” – the Sundance winner that documents the first successful union drive at a US-based Amazon facility. \nXOSECRET presents a VR experience that takes participants through a cautionary fable that imagines Nova Scotia surrounded by rising seas resulting from climate change. \nNoella Murphy‘s solo play “Flower Bed” uses humour and puppets to tell an autobiographical account of how it feels to be taken out of the “productive workforce” as a result of chronic illness. Meanwhile\, Sara Coffin‘s movement choreography “Archive of Loneliness” is set to voice-messages left by a long-term care resident isolated during COVID-19. \nMayworks is no stranger to diversity with a film program composed entirely of shorts by Indigenous women in addition to a showcase of Black animators presented in partnership with AFX. In collaboration with Live Art Dance\, Mayworks also zooms out for a wider look at human relations with “Altération” presented by Kira Arts. \nFinally\, Mayworks reprises its popular Working Class Heritage Tours of downtown Halifax\, which this year will be made all the more visible by an accompanying quilted banner crafted by artists Sarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko. \nThe world may look bleak\, but there’s no shortage of hope in the many ways we can come together and express ourselves creatively. May Day both celebrates and invokes the coming of a new dawn toward the world we desperately need.\nHappy May Day!
