The effervescent and unabashed Albertine tells us about the stars through music\, metaphor\, and story\, teaching us songs to sing along with her and enthusiastically showing us the universe from her perspective. Inviting the audience to enjoy the night sky\, learn about the universe\, and sing a capella songs together\, this play is an hour-long piece of queer magic that is heartbreaking\, uplifting\, and full of joy. \nStarring Geneviève Steele and Rooks Field-Green\, directed by Garry Williams\, and written by Colleen Arcturus MacIsaac with design by Noella Murphy\, Brenda Chicas-Duran\, and Matthew Downey and stage management by Dan Bray.

We will focus on building resilience in our stories\, and digging deep into self-reflection. With warm up writing exercises and activities we will explore different aspects of spoken word. Participants will leave with tips and tricks to overcome writer’s block\, learning how to outline a piece from beginning to end\, and with a few new poems along the way. This will be a place for folks to share their progress and work in a supportive\, welcoming environment. This workshop is for both experienced\, and new poets!\n\n\nRegistration to attend the workshops are free\, however we will be accepting donations to help fund future BSTC programming.

DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Martha Paynter in conversation with Dr. Lianne Yoshida and Nasha Nijhawan for the launch of Lawless: Abortion Under Complete Decriminalization  \nDr. Martha Paynter has worked to advance abortion access in Canada for over twenty years. A writer\, nurse and public scholar\, she is recognized internationally for her expertise at the nexus of reproductive justice and prisoner health. She is an associate professor at the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Nursing\, where her research addresses the health rights of people experiencing incarceration\, as well as sexual and reproductive health care in Canada and around the world. She is the author of Abortion to Abolition: Reproductive Health and Justice in Canada (Fernwood\, 2017) and has published extensively in national magazines (Chatelaine\, Briarpatch) and scientific journals. Paynter is a keen advocate for increasing the influence of women and gender-diverse people in news media and participates regularly in interviews with national and international print\, radio and TV press (CBC/Radio-Canada\, Global\, CTV). She values and fosters collaborations with community organizations and lived-experience experts in reproductive health and prison justice. Paynter is a recipient of the 150th anniversary medal from the Senate of Canada for her volunteer service to the country (2017) and the King Charles III Coronation Medal for service to the nursing profession (2025). \nAbout Lawless \nCanada is the only country with complete decriminalization of abortion: no gestational duration limitations\, no parental consent obligations\, and no waiting periods. In recent years\, other countries (New Zealand\, Colombia\, Uruguay\, Mexico) have made strides toward this\, while the United States has notoriously lost ground. Amidst the tumult\, nurse and scholar Martha Paynter uses historical context and contemporary issues to explain why experts advocate against laws governing abortion. \nDespite decriminalization\, Canadian federal and provincial legislation and regulations about health funding\, delivery\, and human rights all shape how abortion care is delivered. Barriers persist in uneven access\, unclear information\, and belief-based denial of care. In accessible plain language from the expansive perspective of a clinician\, researcher and activist\, Paynter describes abortion policy\, practice and experience and discusses how to resolve challenges that continue more than three decades after Canada became the world’s most legally progressive jurisdiction for abortion.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience the magic of live jazz at The Bus Stop theatre.\n\nCsaba Kanyasi has been playing music for over 40 years. Jazz is Csaba’s main passion. Born in Hungary\, he attended the Bela Bartok Jazz College in Budepest and later studied at MacQuarie University in Adelaide\, Australia. Csaba enjoys playing Jazz standards with a Latin flavour\, creating a sound all of his own. He enjoys participating in jazz and multicultutal festivals accross Canada.\n\nGraham Berry is a professional composer\, arranger and entertainer for more than 30 years and has performed all over the world. Graham has worked in recording studios in Los Angeles and Las Vagas\, composed and performed for television and for headliners such as Cleo Lane\, Johnny Dankworth\, Benny Carter and Bobby​ Shew.\n\n​​ Lukas Pearse is a Halifax basist\, composer\, film sound designer and video artist. He has worked with many of the region’s most creative musicians and artists across varied facets of the cultural scene for over 35 years. His love of sound and original music\, especially improvised music of all sorts\, ensure that his ears are kept open wide.
