SUMMARY:Red Like Fruit
DESCRIPTION:2b is thrilled to present the world premiere of Red Like Fruit by Governor General’s Award-winning playwright\, Hannah Moscovitch. Lauren asks Luke to narrate her life: her fraying mental health\, the growing sense of unease she feels in the world. While Lauren’s been reporting on a high profile case of domestic violence\, she’s been thinking back with eerie ambivalence on a set of sexual events from her adolescence\, and something in her has started to crash. Soon\, Lauren can no longer comprehend her own decisions and desires (like why she asked Luke to narrate for her in the first place). Red Like Fruit interrogates the many contradictions and complexities of complicity\, consent\, patriarchy and traumatic memory in the post #MeToo era. \nWritten by Hannah Moscovitch\nDirected by Christian Barry\nSet\, Lighting and Costume Design by Kaitlin Hickey\nPerformed by Michelle Monteith and David Patrick Flemming\nStage Management by Don Brownrigg\nProduction Management by Sylvia Bell\nAccessibility Coordination by Sara Graham \nNotes:\nDue to the nature of the story and the themes of the play\, 2b recommends that Red Like Fruit is only for audiences 16 years and older. Parental guidance is required.\nWe will be unable to admit latecomers to the performance. \nDuring the performances on Sundays April 7\, 14\, 21st CHILDCARE WILL BE AVAILABLE.\nDuring the performances on Wednesdays April 10th and April 17th MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED.\nFurther details on accessibility measures surrounding the show will be released in the coming weeks. \nNote: 2203 Gottingen Street is wheelchair accessible with private\, gender-neutral washrooms. The audience seating for this production will be on raised levels with steps. If you need a floor-seat/seat near the exit for accessibility purposes please email us at access@2btheatre.com and we will reserve one for you.

SUMMARY:Softly\, now: part concert. part memoir
DESCRIPTION:Softly\, now \nPart concert. Part memoir. \nThis world premiere features 2b’s artistic co-directors unplugged\, singing the soundtrack of their twenty-year friendship. \nIn Softly\, now\, Christian Barry (Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story) and Anthony Black (One Discordant Violin) tell a story about coming\, going\, love\, fear\, and the rising tide. \nFeaturing 2b’s trademark blend of humour\, headiness\, and heart\, and marking the first time the two friends have shared the stage\, this show strips away theatrics to expose two artists at the top of their game reliving the past and contending with an uncertain future. \nWarning: This show contains sea shanties. \nCo-created by Anthony Black and Christian Barry with David Gagnon Walker\nDirected by Judy Wensel \nBuy Tickets Online\n_____________________________________________\n2b wishes to acknowledge our role as settlers on this land and that this event is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Mi’kmaq territory. Particularly for this production centred around the playwrights’ own relationships to their home\, it is especially important to remember and recognize that we are on stolen land. \nThe Bus Stop Theatre is located in K’jipuktuk\, which is covered by The Treaties of Peace and Friendship. These Treaties officially continue to be in effect\, however settlers have repeatedly violated their terms. An immediate example of such is the case of the Alton Gas project\, which you can learn more about here: https://stopaltongas.wordpress.com/ \nThe Bus Stop is also located on Gottingen Street\, which has historically been the home of Black Nova Scotians. \nWe are incredibly grateful to be able to create and present in this space.\n_____________________________________________\nAccess 2b\nWant to see Softly\, now\, but can’t afford it right now? Find details about our Access 2b program here ( https://bit.ly/32algsu )\, supported by O’Regan’s. \n2b is a member of the Culture Access Pass program for newcomers to Canada. ( https://bit.ly/3bSQhpf ) \n2b newbie\nIf you bring a friend who has never seen a 2b show to Softly\, now\, you’ll both save 20% when you use the promo code 2bNEWBIE. \nThanks and acknowledgements\n2b gratefully acknowledges support from the city of Halifax\, Nova Scotia’s Department of Communities\, Culture\, and Heritage\, Arts Nova Scotia\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, Emera\, Office Interiors\, Cox & Palmer\, and Red Door Realty\, as well as our Emerging Artist Donor\, RBC.

SUMMARY:One Long Table and a Microphone: A Story Telling Party with 2b
DESCRIPTION:On December 7th from 7:00-10:00pm\, Artists and arts community members are invited to an evening of conversation and storytelling with 2b theatre company. \nThis March for the 20th anniversary of the company\, 2b premieres a story about maritime culture\, music\, and its role in the development of two particular Haligonian artists in the early 21st century. This still-untitled piece sees artistic co-directors Anthony Black and Christian Barry on stage together for the first time. Kicking off the company’s anniversary celebrations as part of the production’s development period this December\, 2b shares material from the show\, opens the floor to other creators to share their own work\, and hosts a night of conversation on what it means to be a storyteller in the Maritimes. \nThe evening begins with a Long Table discussion on the topic “Maritime Storytelling and Maritime Storytellers”\, before transitioning into a party and performance cabaret with an Open Mic format. Artists of all experience levels and mediums are encouraged to submit a 5-10 minute performance in any form\, at any stage of development. We’ll round off the evening with Anthony and Christian performing a few songs and stories from the new show. \nThis event is hosted by 2b’s Office & Communications Manager Chelsea Dickie and 2b’s RBC Emerging Artist-in-Residence David Gagnon Walker. Admission is free\, the bar will be open\, and light snacks will be provided! \n_____________________________________________\nAs with each production\, 2b wishes to acknowledge our role as settlers on this land and that this event is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Mi’kmaq territory. Particularly for this production centred around the playwrights’ own relationships to their home\, it is especially important to remember and recognize that we are on stolen land which we are privileged to create and share our work on. \nThe Bus Stop Theatre is located in K’jipuktuk\, which is upheld by The Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We are incredibly grateful to be able to create and present in this space.\n_____________________________________________ \nAbout the Long Table: \nThe Long Table is a performance/conversation hybrid designed to facilitate a non-hierarchical dialogue\, first developed by artist and scholar Lois Weaver as an experiment in participation and public engagement. The Long Table format is a dinner table atmosphere where all voices are encouraged to ask questions\, make statements\, leave comments\, or simply sit\, listen\, and watch. \nAttendees are invited to participate according to their comfort and interest: those who wish to speak sit at the table while those who wish to listen are seated in the spectator chairs along the walls of the room. You can move from or to the table at any time. The hosts will provide an etiquette sheet and starter questions to encourage conversation. \nMore information on the Long Table format here:\nhttp://www.split-britches.com/longtable \nThe Long Table at this event will be centred around the theme “Maritime Storytelling and Maritime Storytellers”. 2b is excited to have Anthony and Christian in the same room to connect and share with other members of our city’s artistic community\, in an open conversation about Halifax’s artistic environment. Bring your thoughts\, your stories\, your questions\, and your friends! \nAbout the Open Mic: \nAlongside Christian and Anthony’s presentation of material from their new show\, 2b is excited to welcome submissions from artists in any medium to present short 5-10 minute pieces in an Open Mic format. We encourage submissions from artists at all levels of experience\, pieces at any stage of development\, and any form that speaks to you. Try something new! Bring back something old! We look forward to a lively night of storytelling\, songs\, and performances. Each participating performance will also be given two comp tickets to 2b’s show premiere in March as a thank you. \nTo submit to the open mic\, simply e-mail Chelsea Dickie at chelsea@2btheatre.com and give us a sense of what you want to do. The only restrictions are that pieces must be 5-10 minutes\, and setup is nothing more than a microphone and a basic stage-lighting wash. The deadline for submissions to the Open Mic is Sunday\, December 1st.

SUMMARY:Blanket Exercise with Elder Billy Lewis
DESCRIPTION:From 1:30 pm – 4 pm on Tuesday August 20th\, join us at The Bus Stop Theatre (2203 Gottingen St\, K’jipuktuk/Halifax) for a blanket exercise facilitated by Shila LeBlanc\, Doug Rigby\, Mary Rigby\, and Elder Billy Lewis. \nThis event is jointly presented by 2b theatre company and The Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative. \nThis is a pay what you can event (suggested donation is $20\, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds). All proceeds will be evenly split between the Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative and the Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Centre. Please note that the elder fee has already been confirmed\, separate from PWYC contributions. \nTo Sign Up Click Here \nAny questions can be forwarded to karen@2btheatre.com. \nABOUT THE KAIROS BLANKET EXERCISE \nThe blanket exercise is a unique\, interactive\, and participatory history lesson developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders\, knowledge keepers\, and educators. \nDeveloped in response to the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in 1996 –which recommended education about Canadian-Indigenous history as one of the key steps to reconciliation — the blanket exercise covers more than 500 years in a 90-minute experiential workshop that aims to foster understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Since its creation\, the exercise has been updated several times to include new information such as the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation final report. \nDuring the exercise\, participants walk on blankets representing the land and into the role of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis peoples by reading scrolls and carrying cards which ultimately determine their outcome as they literally ‘walk’ through situations that include pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. Participants are guided through the experience by trained facilitators (who read the script and assume the roles of European explorers and settlers) and Indigenous Elders or knowledge keepers. The exercise concludes with a debriefing\, conducted as a talking circle\, during which participants discuss the learning experience\, process their feelings\, ask questions\, share insights and deepen their understanding. \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nThe Bus Stop Theatre is located in Mi’kma’ki\, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. Mi’kmaw Peoples have lived and cared for this land\, which provides all our richness and wealth\, for over 13\,500 years. We are privileged to live and work on this land that we now call home.
