DESCRIPTION:A Workshop by Becoming Old Growth\nWhat is your relationship with rest? Our personal experiences with burnout led us to global rest movements and the anti-capitalist rest manifesto of “Nap Bishop” Tricia Hersey. What changes when we recognize exhaustion as a collective issue rather than a personal one? In this three-hour workshop\, we invite participants into a guided\, communal resting space. Through gentle\, unstructured  opportunities to listen\, write\, draw\, move\, and make sound—or simply rest—the artists will guide participants to reflect on these  questions\, emphasizing the role of rest as a natural and necessary balance to labour. \nParticipants will be invited to share their ideas and experiences with the artists following the workshop session. SUMMARY:Portrait of the Artist as an Essential Worker
DESCRIPTION:Work by Sarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko\nIn collaboration\, Mosher and Genosko use printmaking and textile processes to illustrate their experiences as essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are both professional artists who were employed in ‘casual’ day jobs in sectors that were labeled essential and became full-time during the COVID-19 pandemic: the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and Canada Post\, respectively. With their similar experiences they dig deeper into the ‘essential’ label where art and work don’t often intersect. They explore the repetitive nature of labour through the repetitive nature of printmaking\, and create images relevant to their experience; the images are printed on the uniforms they and their coworkers wore during their time of essential sector work. Folk quilting traditionally uses old clothes and other found materials for utility\, and the shape of the garments inform the geometry of the quilt. The uniforms are sewn into quilted banners that do not follow a traditional repeating pattern or conform to a rectangle\, but rather use patchwork and appliqué techniques to create an uncertain feeling. SUMMARY:Bread & Roses: Can You See Us?
DESCRIPTION:English & French bilingual performance | Performance bilingue anglais-français\n>>Register Here for FREE Childcare\nASL interpretation will be available\n“Bread and Roses: Can you see us?” is an original performance created by visual artist and labour organizer Tricia Robinson Illustration (she/her) and poet and social justice activist Laura Doyle Péan (they/them). This collaborative performance tackles topics of invisibilized labour\, union work\, collective liberation and the importance of solidarity in the face of intersecting social crises.  Building on their decade of community organizing experience within the labour\, racial\, social and climate justice movements\, the two tiohtià:ke/mooniyang (Montréal) based artists attempt to shine light on forms of labour that are too often hidden and devalued. \nLive on stage\, Tricia will create original visual artwork in several mediums as Laura Doyle Péan recites some of their moving poetry  with themes of domestic and care labour\, activism\, unions\, and freedom. The conception of Tricia’s art pieces will be projected onto a  screen\, allowing the audience to witness her creation process live and close up. The projection of her work will serve to honour the  labour and care that goes into creating illustrations\, embroideries and linocuts\, hence putting emphasis on our understanding of art as  labour\, as well as pridefully using mediums that have such a rich history within liberation and activist movements. Unapologetically feminist and pro-worker\, Tricia and Laura\, with care and devotion\, are using this performance as a way to open conversations about  the labour movement and unionism as a whole\, and the importance of recognizing forms of labour that have historically been  undervalued\, criminalized\, and disregarded.

It sets bells ringing in the mind of the reader so that he makes his own music …” \n \nNearly lost in the annals of Canadian history\, the writings of Joe Wallace—radical believer in socialist ideals\, writer of anti-capitalist verses\, and survivor of detainment by the Canadian government—have been revived by his great-great-niece\, director Sara Wylie. \nSearching through library archives\, family records\, and footage from the early decades of the Canadian settler state\, Wylie assembles the story of Wallace the poet and revolutionary. “The more I began looking for him\, the more I began to see parts of myself reflected\,” she says. His poems are spirited\, forthright and folksy; they recall a time of great political change and opportunity. \nInextricable from Wallace’s life and work is the history of Canada’s labour movement and the increasing involvement of the state in its disruption. The sense archive invites you to join us for a Community Arts Event! We will guide participants through a simple score of folding and unfolding together. During this score you are invited to share stories\, memories\, and anecdotes about motherhood/mothering in relationship to loss and/or potential. We are interested in hearing/exchanging these stories as part of our research for our performance project titled This Body of Work. Responses will be documented via video\, audio and/or text and participants will have the choice to have their stories included as part of our project. We will also present a short artist talk and discussion about our project (in progress). \nRefreshments and snacks/light dinner will be served following the event. You will leave with a small gift from us in return for your participation! Child minding is available during the event if needed. It features Soundjata Keita\, whose exploits have been transmitted through song and kora music played by lyrical poets from West Africa\, known as griots. I was especially interested in the part of the legend known as “The Awakening of the Lion” to address themes of oppression\, courage\, metamorphosis\, passage and liberation\, all explored through rhythm\, sound and movement. \nBorn from an alliance between the buffalo and the lion\, Soundjata Keita\, the long-awaited child whose birth was foretold by soothsayers\, is unable to walk. After years of humiliation\, against all odds\, he stands up\, walks across the village and uproots a baobab. This marks the beginning of his awakening\, which will lead him to found the great Mandingo Empire\, unifying the regions of West Africa\, including Guinea\, my home country. \nCredits: \nArtistic direction\, choreography and dance: Aly Keita Music: Lasso Sanou and Aly Keita Rehearsal director and production manager: Raffaela Siniscalchi \nDescription et synopsis\nPour la réalisation de mon œuvre\, je me suis inspiré de l’épopée mandingue\, l’un des récits fondateurs les plus marquants des traditions orales africaines (XIIIe siècle)\, et de son personnage-clé : Soundjata Keita. Entre histoire et légende\, les griots – des poètes lyriques de l’Afrique de l’Ouest – nous ont transmis\, par le chant et les notes de leurs koras\, les exploits de ce personnage emblématique de l’Afrique occidentale. Dans mon processus de création\, je me suis surtout intéressé à la partie de la légende connue sous le nom de « Le réveil du lion »\, pour aborder\, tout en rythme et en mouvement\, les thèmes de l’oppression\, du courage\, de la métamorphose\, du passage et de la libération. \nEngendré par la puissance du buffle et du lion\, Soundjata Keita\, l’enfant que tous attendaient et dont la naissance avait été prédite par les mages\, est incapable de marcher. Le prince\, déchu\, apprit à mettre un pied devant l’autre et trouva la force de se relever. Sous les regards stupéfaits de son peuple\, Soundjata marcha vers un baobab qu’il arracha du sol. Ce fut le début de son éveil qui l’aurait mené à unifier les territoires de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et fonder\, ainsi\, le grand empire Mandingue.

The screening lasts 62 minutes. \nAdmission by donation. \nTHE FILMS: \nIf There is No Struggle (United States) by Jared Katriane\nA young woman discovers the working class history of her neighbourhood through the lens of a 1965 Canon Scoopic 16mm camera and historical figures via Boston’s public art. She begins an important conversation that needs to continue in the labour movement given the overwhelming right wing ideology and misinformation being spread targeting working class folks.\nThe film title comes from an 1857 Frederick Douglass speech: “If there is no struggle\, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom\, and yet depreciate agitation\, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” \nSee Us Come Together (Philippines) by Alyssa Suico\nSee Us Come Together is an amateur documentary following the members of the Optodev Workers Union\, tracing their story of forming their union before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.\nWhen factories were forced to close operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, an ophthalmic lens workers’ union ensured mechanisms to protect their workers\, with the ultimate goal of changing the culture of labour in their factory. The documentary brings to focus what is essential to keep a country running in times of crisis. While the pandemic turned the spotlight on essential and frontline workers\, what was essential to the workers of Optodev was their union.\nSubtitled in ENGLISH \nWhat Will I Show You? (Canada) by Elie-John Joseph\nIn the tradition of direct cinema\, What Will I Show You is an intimate documentary in which a grandfather and his grandson discuss the past and future of Innu culture. An important\, first-person film telling the stories of Innu and their culture\, their work\, and the immediate impacts of environmental degradation on their lands.\nThemes of Indigenous learning\, work and way of life. From the Innu nation and residing in the Tiohtià:ke territory since 2006\, Elie-John Joseph has been passionate about cinema since a young age. Self-taught\, he has been practising film photography for several years. \nOpera Trans*formed (Canada) by Leah Borts-Kuperman & Maria Sarrouh\n“If I wasn’t an opera singer\, would I be a trans man?” asks Teiya Kasahara\, a gender non-binary singer\, partway through the film. Applying to immigrate is a form of labour: it requires time\, effort\, intention\, skill and money. This film about immigration application work tells the stories of Martha\, Winnie and Stella. As prospective immigrants to Canada\, they are tagged as being “abnormal” (to use the state’s term) through the immigration medical examination and therefore face higher barriers and discrimination during the immigration process.\nThemes include the criminalization of HIV\, and a critical look at the idea of “good immigrants.” \nKellys (Spain) by Javier Fesser\nIn this high quality short\, we glimpse a private conversation between two long-time hotel workers and close friends. The highly contentious trial that followed  spurred the public to demand workplace safety reforms and became a touchstone for radical and progressive political movements. At the time\, people swore that the victims and the fire would never be forgotten. \nThree actors – from another country and century – are tasked with reading from the massive trial transcript as quickly as possible. Despite the  speed\, they must communicate the key points and central conflicts\, while giving insight into the 1911 events and their resonance with the world of today. Can they beat their best time? Can they surprise us? SUMMARY:Mi'kma'ki 2030: Hope and Fire
DESCRIPTION:May 23rd to 25th | 8:00pm-9:00pm\nWhat are the possibilities for Mi’kma’ki? \nIn this dynamic\, multi-disciplinary installation-performance\, indigenous and black artists dream\, hope and create a different way forward for this land. The artists individually and collectively articulate their visions through a provocative sharing of film\, visual art\, music\, word and dance. Hope and Fire invites people of all ages to immerse themselves in the most pressing questions facing our collective existence on this land. \nThe Mi’kma’ki 2030 Collective:\nSarah Brooks is a Textile Artist and Craftsperson. Born and raised in Nova Scotia\, Sarah is inspired by natural elements deriving from the landscapes that surround her within Mi’kma’ki. Always working with her hands\, Sarah chooses to work creatively in as many tactile building ways as possible and is constantly looking at and exploring different avenues through materials\, mediums and methods\, using fabrics\, colours and textures\, weaving\, sewing\, dyeing and screenprint. Sarah continues to build upon her skills and methods and concept ideologies through her studies at NSCAD University\, majoring in the Textiles field with a Minor in Art History and deep interest in Indigenous Studies. \nCatherine Martin is a Mi’kmaq person of the Millbrook community in Truro\, Nova Scotia.  Catherine’s professional and academic interests have been influenced and driven by her passion for the lives and stories of Aboriginal women. As an independent filmmaker\, director\, and writer\, Catherine’s repertoire of work includes the animation film Little Boy Who Lived with Muini’skw (2004)\, and Spirit Wind (2000). In 2006\, Catherine added the NFB online documentary Bringing Annie Mae Home to her accomplishments. Fittingly\, Catherine’s contributions to film\, television\, and digital media in Atlantic Canada were recognized in March 2015 with a WAVE Award from Women in Film and Television Atlantic. Catherine has acted as the past Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Aboriginal Peoples Television Network\, and as the past Chair of the Society for Canadian Artists of Native Ancestry. \nCynthia Martin’s ultimate desire is to celebrate the beauty of nature\, believing it is a gift of peace\, joy and healing from the Spirit of Grace\, Glory and Renewal. She is inspired by the indigenous beauty of Nova Scotia and hopes to reflect it in her work as a Mi’kmaq textile and ceramic artist. Cynthia is a member of the Mi’kmaq First Nation of Millbrook. She has a BFA from NSCAD\, and is currently enrolled in their Visual Arts Certificate Program. \nBria C. Miller was born in Yarmouth\, Nova Scotia. Bria is a Queer\, Black\, Indigenous mixed media visual artist\, arts educator\, musician\, graphic and community facilitator. She participated in Bridging Bus\, connecting with the Washington\, DC chapter of Black Lives Matter and Black Youth Project in 2016. In April of 2018\, she participated in Emergent Strategy Immersion training with Adrienne Maree Brown\, a Black femme author and social justice facilitator in Detroit. These international relationships continue to strengthen and build Bria’s capacity to organize\, which in turn allow her to improve how she offers various art programs or events in Halifax. Through her dedication to building equity and relationships in community\, she is working to create spaces where racialized and LGBTQIAP+ artists can be centered. \nTayla Fern Paul is a Mi’kmaq artist\, activist and metal fabricator currently living in Eskasoni\, Unama’ki. A member of Pictou Landing First Nation\, she grew up in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). She has a painting at the Dalhousie Weldon Law building\, a relief clay tile currently on display at the Museum of Natural History\, is currently finishing a steel and copper tree sculpture for Eel River Bar First Nation\, and is teaching art on reserves in Cape Breton. Born in Kjipuktuk and raised in Wolfville\, Tayla returned to Kjipuktuk after traveling as a youth to remain on homeland. Tayla has also done public speaking on issues of social and environmental justice. She has four children\, and is the daughter of artist Leonard Paul. \nLiliona Quarmyne is a dancer\, actor\, singer\, community organizer\, and activist committed to progressive social change. Her eclectic background and experiences have taken her through many performance styles on four different continents. She choreographs and dances across Canada and internationally\, creates and performs original works as an independent artist\, facilitates community programming\, is the Artistic Director of Kinetic Studio\, and works as the Community Catalyst at Mocean Dance. Liliona sees her body as a link to past and to future generations. What do we do with the howling\, hopeless\, yellow tinged guts in our frail little bodies?” \nWinnipeg\, 1919. Massive unemployment and inflation. In the wake of the Russian Revolution\, workers\, many of them newcomers to Canada\, unite and effectively shut down the city. Thousands of women act as strikers and strike-breakers. It’s an eye-opening look into how everyday workers are perceived and how hard it can be to get ahead. \nKAMPUNG TAPIR (Indonesia/Malaysia\, Drama\, 17 min)\nOne Sunday afternoon\, migrant workers Anne and her husband leave their five-year-old daughter from Kampung Tapir (Tapir Village)\, Malaysia. On the way to Singapore\, their bus hits a wild Malayan tapir crossing the road\, but no one is eager to save it. In the struggle of choosing a country to settle down in\, Anne finds that she is like this endangered species\, drifting between places to find a better life. \nTRABAJADORES (USA\, Documentary\, 10 min)\n55 years later\, Arturo S. Rodríguez\, President of the United Farm Workers of America\, continues the task that César Chávez started\, with the upcoming threat of the new Trump administration and the negative impact it may have on undocumented workers’ jobs and rights. \nGUT FEELING (Canada\, Drama\, 2 min)\nA girl is at work when she is asked to put something away. She doesn’t feel comfortable with doing it\, which leads to an accident. \nLIFE OF DEATH (Indonesia\, Animation\, 5 min)\nDeath\, while struggling to balance his work and family life\, talks about his existence\, his job\, and his opinions on human beings in an interview from the documentary ‘Life of Death’. \nHAUNTED WITNESS (Canada\, Documentary\, 10 min)\nTrauma suffered by crime reporters is an under-reported and stigmatised issue. It is often forgotten or widely unacknowledged that like policeman and paramedics\, journalists are first responders to daily scenes of horror. Admitting to experiencing trauma to newsroom colleagues\, however\, is widely denounced within the industry. \nNOUVELLE CUISINE (Spain\, Animation\, 5 min)\nA chef that loves his job and enjoys the delicacies he cooks\, is preparing a very different menu for a peculiar group of clients.

DESCRIPTION:Standing with Water is a tribute to two bodies of water on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean – the Songor Lagoon in Ada\, Ghana\, and the Shubenacadie River here in Nova Scotia. \nThis suite of dance pieces brings the two bodies of water and the issues that surround them into dialogue\, exploring questions of ancestral relationship\, responsibility\, teachings\, and the sacred. The pieces are a tribute to water itself\, and to those who work so hard to protect it. SUMMARY:The True Cost of Coal
DESCRIPTION:Part visual art installation\, part spoken word storytelling\, The True Cost of Coal examines the cost of coal-powered electricity\, while celebrating stories of struggle from communities in the Appalachian mountains. A collaboration between the Beehive Design Collective and hip hop duo Test Their Logik\, this event features large scale murals and stinging rhymes that will resonate loudly in Nova Scotia. \nAdmission: Pay What You Can.\nNOTE: Sign language interpreters will be present during this event. \nThe True Cost of Coal graphic uses mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia as a lens through which to understand the historical and contemporary story of energy and resource extraction. \nWith a gigantic portable mural teeming with intricate images of plants and animals from the most biodiverse temperate forest on the planet\, the Bees will share (and seek) stories of how mountaintop removal coal mining affect communities and ecosystems throughout Appalachia and beyond. \nLong exploited as a resource-extraction colony within the US\, the Appalachian mountains are home to a fight for survival which has determined\, in part\, the industrial power of this country. Without coal\, mined at a great cost to Appalachian communities\, there would be no ‘cheap’ electricity. Today’s energy corporations and government bodies are continuing to show the extent of their greed and short-sightedness as they push their extractive agendas in the “New Coal Rush.” We will expose the deceptions of “clean coal” technologies and bring to light the root causes of the climate chaos the planet is facing today. \nThe True Cost of Coal examines all of our connections to coal\, while celebrating stories of struggle from mountain communities. DESCRIPTION:The Sankofa teaches us that we must go back to recognize what was before us while moving forward in the future. \nAs part of this looking back\, a stellar roster of African Nova Scotian singer/songwriters will be paying tribute to the internationally known a capella group Four the Moment. Each of them will also showcase their new works and stories of inspiration and growth. \nSinger/Songwriter circles give the audience a glimpse into the inspirations of these talented artists. Each creative process is unique\, exciting and special. \nAdmission: Pay What you Can. \nOur MC for the night will be Folami Jones.\nFeatured Singer/Songwriters:\nCyndi Cain\nPat Watson\nKwento\nZamani \nThe Artists: \nCyndi Cain\nShe’s got the kind of voice that’s capable of giving you goose bumps on the most sweltering of summer nights. The Halifax-based soul singer has shared the stage with Michael Buble\, Aretha Franklin\, Lauryn Hill\, Sharon Jones Naturally 7\, Charles Bradley and in 2010 was selected to perform for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Cyndi’s release Essentially Cyndi earned her an East Coast Music Award nomination\, as did her follow up\, 2013’s Soul Food\, a more old school sounding record that’s filled with passionate songs of both beautiful joy and pain. Arguably the east coast powerhouse of soul\, Cain’s taken home the Galaxie Rising Star Award\, the African Nova Scotia Music Award for Best R&B Artist and this year and has been named ANSMA’s Artist of the Year.\n—\nPat Watson\nClassic jazz\, silky smooth with a gospel touch\, that’s the music in Patricia Watson. The purity of Pat’s voice\, combined with her style and grace won her the Rising Star Award for 2009 from the African Nova Scotia Music Association. She has been singing most of her life and became serious about her music when she retired in 2009. In addition to singing with her band and the A Capella Women’s Choir\, Pat has directed gospel music workshops for The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and various churches in Nova Scotia. She has also conducted jazz and gospel workshops for The Harmony Bazaar Women’s Festival of Women and Song and various fund raising events. Patricia has performed for different churches in Nova Scotia\, Vancouver\, Arizona\, California and New Mexico as a guest soloist\, speaker and workshop facilitator.\n—\nKwento\nOriginally from the Preston Township\, Kwento is a product of self discovery and reclaiming her African roots. She wishes for her presence to tell a story that validates and offers comfort to the silenced. Formerly known as Kirsten Olivia\, Kwento is not your typical R&B singer – her unique sound can be described as a cross between Neo soul and Experimental R&B; bringing genres together in a fusion that’s familiar yet stretching creative boundaries. Her performances are full of emotional honesty and empowered femininity and her vocals leave audiences speaking of her effortlessness. She boasts an impressive list of stages she has performed on\, from Harlem New York’s Carribbean Music Festival\, Halifax’s Jazz and Tall Ships Festivals\, Nova Scotia Music Week\, East Coast Music Week\, and The African Nova Scotian Music Awards stage\, where she won the award for Best Emerging artist. Her musical exploits have seen her become an ECMA Nominee for Best R&B Recording and The Coast’s Best R&B Silver winner.\n—\nZamani\nAt just 17 years old\, Zamani’s music is described as captivating\, satiny-soulful and refreshingly pure! Greatly inspired by the R&B\, pop\, Jazz and soul divas of this era\, Zamani\, skillfully arranges\, produces\, writes\, sings and performs original musical works. After a featured performance at Halifax’s popular “For the Love of God Concert in 2015 and a debut jazz performance at the prestigious Halifax TD International Jazz Festival – which won the praise of vocalist Sharon Jones – Zamani was invited to give a featured performance at the 18 th Annual African Nova Scotian Music Awards which launched her into the African Nova Scotian music scene. Zamani was recently named co-recipient of the 2018 ANSMA Portia White Youth Award; She is a recipient of the 2018 Jongleur Productions Performance Award and a nominee of the Jongleur Youth Arts Scholarship.
