SUMMARY:Mayworks presents A More Radiant Sphere
DESCRIPTION:By Sara Wylie\nPresented in partnership with Carbon Arc Cinema\n \nThursday\, May 18th @ 6:30pm \nLocation: Bus Stop Theatre Co-op (2203 Gottingen St) \nDuration: 40 mins followed by a 30 mins Q&A with filmmaker Sara Wylie moderated by MLA Gary Burrill \nTickets: $5/$10/$15 \nBUY TICKETS HERE\n \n[CC] This film will be closed captioned. \nA mid-length hybrid documentary about Joe Wallace: Canadian Communist poet\, political prisoner\, and the filmmaker’’s long lost family member. Shot on 16mm and digital\, featuring original songs by award-winning musician Fiver/Simone Schmidt. \n“Poetry is of a higher order. It sets bells ringing in the mind of the reader so that he makes his own music …” \n \nNearly lost in the annals of Canadian history\, the writings of Joe Wallace—radical believer in socialist ideals\, writer of anti-capitalist verses\, and survivor of detainment by the Canadian government—have been revived by his great-great-niece\, director Sara Wylie. \nSearching through library archives\, family records\, and footage from the early decades of the Canadian settler state\, Wylie assembles the story of Wallace the poet and revolutionary. “The more I began looking for him\, the more I began to see parts of myself reflected\,” she says. His poems are spirited\, forthright and folksy; they recall a time of great political change and opportunity. \nInextricable from Wallace’s life and work is the history of Canada’s labour movement and the increasing involvement of the state in its disruption. A More Radiant Sphere captures a time and a feeling at risk of being erased by Canadian myth\, when the possibility of a world beyond capitalism surged forth into poetry. (Written by Sarah Bakke) \nThe film will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Sara Wylie moderated by Gary Burril\, MLA for Halifax Chebucto \n \nFilm Credits: \nDirected\, produced and written by Sara Wylie\nFeaturing Bruce Wallace \nMusic by Simone Schmidt\nWith Nick Dourado on piano\nNathan Doucet on percussion\nJohn Showman on fiddle \nCinematography by Suz Friesen and Sara Wylie\nSound recording by Kellen Jackson and Sara Wylie\nSound mix/edit by Michelle Hwu and Tim Atkins\nColour by Sam Gilling

SUMMARY:Mayworks presents: Djata - Conversations of the Manden
DESCRIPTION:By Aly Keita\nPresented in partnership with Prismatic Arts Festival in association with Live Art Dance\n \n \nFriday\, May 5th @ 7:00pm\nSaturday\, May 6th @ 7:00pm \nWith opening performance of Unfold by Reequal Smith \nLocation: Bus Stop Theatre Co-op (2203 Gottingen St) \nDuration:\nUnfold by Reequal Smith – 10 mins\nDjata: Conversations of the Manden by Aly Keita – 20 mins\n(15 mins intermission between performances) \nTickets: $5/$10/$15/$20 (For both shows) \nBUY TICKETS HERE\n \nTo create my piece\, I drew inspiration from the Epic of Soundjata\, one of the most significant foundational stories from 13th-century African oral tradition. It features Soundjata Keita\, whose exploits have been transmitted through song and kora music played by lyrical poets from West Africa\, known as griots. I was especially interested in the part of the legend known as “The Awakening of the Lion” to address themes of oppression\, courage\, metamorphosis\, passage and liberation\, all explored through rhythm\, sound and movement. \nBorn from an alliance between the buffalo and the lion\, Soundjata Keita\, the long-awaited child whose birth was foretold by soothsayers\, is unable to walk. After years of humiliation\, against all odds\, he stands up\, walks across the village and uproots a baobab. This marks the beginning of his awakening\, which will lead him to found the great Mandingo Empire\, unifying the regions of West Africa\, including Guinea\, my home country.

SUMMARY:CLIFF: Canadian Labour International Film Festival with Mayworks
DESCRIPTION:Mayworks Kjipuktuk/Halifax Festival of Working People in the Arts is proud to partner once again with the Canadian Labour International Film Festival for a satellite screening of films from their 16th annual festival. The screening takes place November 17\, 2022\, at the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op. \nThis year we are screening If There is No Struggle (United States) by Jared Katriane\, See Us Come Together (Philippines) by Alyssa Suico\, What Will I Show You? (Canada) by Elie-John Joseph\, Opera Trans*formed (Canada) by Leah Borts-Kuperman & Maria Sarrouh\, The Unmaking of Medical Inadmissibility (Canada) by Laura Bisaillon\, & Kellys (Spain) by Javier Fesser. The screening lasts 62 minutes. \nAdmission by donation. \nTHE FILMS: \nIf There is No Struggle (United States) by Jared Katriane\nA young woman discovers the working class history of her neighbourhood through the lens of a 1965 Canon Scoopic 16mm camera and historical figures via Boston’s public art. She begins an important conversation that needs to continue in the labour movement given the overwhelming right wing ideology and misinformation being spread targeting working class folks.\nThe film title comes from an 1857 Frederick Douglass speech: “If there is no struggle\, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom\, and yet depreciate agitation\, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” \nSee Us Come Together (Philippines) by Alyssa Suico\nSee Us Come Together is an amateur documentary following the members of the Optodev Workers Union\, tracing their story of forming their union before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.\nWhen factories were forced to close operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, an ophthalmic lens workers’ union ensured mechanisms to protect their workers\, with the ultimate goal of changing the culture of labour in their factory. The documentary brings to focus what is essential to keep a country running in times of crisis. While the pandemic turned the spotlight on essential and frontline workers\, what was essential to the workers of Optodev was their union.\nSubtitled in ENGLISH \nWhat Will I Show You? (Canada) by Elie-John Joseph\nIn the tradition of direct cinema\, What Will I Show You is an intimate documentary in which a grandfather and his grandson discuss the past and future of Innu culture. An important\, first-person film telling the stories of Innu and their culture\, their work\, and the immediate impacts of environmental degradation on their lands.\nThemes of Indigenous learning\, work and way of life. From the Innu nation and residing in the Tiohtià:ke territory since 2006\, Elie-John Joseph has been passionate about cinema since a young age. Self-taught\, he has been practising film photography for several years. \nOpera Trans*formed (Canada) by Leah Borts-Kuperman & Maria Sarrouh\n“If I wasn’t an opera singer\, would I be a trans man?” asks Teiya Kasahara\, a gender non-binary singer\, partway through the film. It’s a dilemma facing gender non-binary and trans singers working in a field whose roles are rigidly defined along gender lines: sopranos and mezzos are cast as women (so-called “trouser roles” aside); tenors and basses as men.\nTeiya Kasahara (they/them) leads a new generation of trans* opera performers\, activists and self-proclaimed “shit-disturbers” making their voices heard–whether the classical music world likes it or not. \nThe Unmaking of Medical Inadmissibility (Canada) by Laura Bisaillon\nHave you ever considered the amount of work it takes to immigrate to Canada? Applying to immigrate is a form of labour: it requires time\, effort\, intention\, skill and money. This film about immigration application work tells the stories of Martha\, Winnie and Stella. As prospective immigrants to Canada\, they are tagged as being “abnormal” (to use the state’s term) through the immigration medical examination and therefore face higher barriers and discrimination during the immigration process.\nThemes include the criminalization of HIV\, and a critical look at the idea of “good immigrants.” \nKellys (Spain) by Javier Fesser\nIn this high quality short\, we glimpse a private conversation between two long-time hotel workers and close friends. But there are always things that are hidden\, even from your best friend.\nSubtitled in ENGLISH

On spaceship earth\, energy is neither created nor destroyed\, it simply changes form. This is true for individuals that make up Superfluid Collective. Ranging from Bengali\, Iranian\, Pubjabi M’ikMa’ki\, English\, Irish and Canadian backgrounds\, the group has come together through a shared thirst for Olands and basement jams. The group’s experience of immigration is paralleled by their vagabond work ethic\, moving between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for shows. SUMMARY:A Timed Speed Read of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Trial Transcript with Additional Notes
DESCRIPTION:May 29th to 31st | 7:30pm-9:00pm & June 1st | 2:00pm-3:30pm\nPresented by Surplus Production Unit\nIn 1911\, 146 people were killed in a fire at the factory of the Triangle Waist Company in New York. Despite the  speed\, they must communicate the key points and central conflicts\, while giving insight into the 1911 events and their resonance with the world of today. Can they beat their best time? Can they surprise us? Can they help us remember? \nConceived by Alex McLean\nwith (alphabetically) Chun Shing Au\, Zach Faye\, Carmen Lee\, Kat McCormack\, Briony Merritt\, Lily Ross-Millard and Richie Wilcox \nStarring: Kat McCormack\, Briony Merritt and Richie Wilcox \nSet/prop design: Chun Shing Au\, Kai On Kerwin Lam and Carmen Lee\nDirection and Script (from verbatim sources): Alex McLean\nPreliminary Research: Myrto Koumarianos \n**Sign language interpretation will be provided during the May 30th presentation. \n \nTickets and full Festival details available at: www.mayworkshalifax.ca

SUMMARY:Remembering the Winnipeg General
DESCRIPTION:May 20th & 21st | 7:30pm-9:00pm\nDaPoPo Theatre presents a staged reading of a new play by Thomas McKechnie.\n“So what do we do in divided\, fearful times? What do we do with the howling\, hopeless\, yellow tinged guts in our frail little bodies?” \nWinnipeg\, 1919. Massive unemployment and inflation. In the wake of the Russian Revolution\, workers\, many of them newcomers to Canada\, unite and effectively shut down the city. Thousands of women act as strikers and strike-breakers. The Citizens’ Committee\, representing the city’s ruling class\, along with the police\, respond with force. \nToronto-based theatre artist Thomas McKechnie\, known to Halifax audiences from A Wake For Lost Time and 4 1⁄2 (ig)noble truths\, asks us to remember Canada’s landmark strike and consider the price of state-sanctioned violence and systemic oppression. \nHalifax actors Madeleine Tench and Kristi Anderson lend voices to the over 40 characters in a staged reading of this rousing new play directed by GaRRy Williams and Keelin Jack. \n**Sign language interpretation will be provided during the May 21st presentation. \nTickets and full festival details can be found at www.mayworkshalifax.ca

SUMMARY:The True Cost of Coal
DESCRIPTION:Part visual art installation\, part spoken word storytelling\, The True Cost of Coal examines the cost of coal-powered electricity\, while celebrating stories of struggle from communities in the Appalachian mountains. A collaboration between the Beehive Design Collective and hip hop duo Test Their Logik\, this event features large scale murals and stinging rhymes that will resonate loudly in Nova Scotia. \nAdmission: Pay What You Can.\nNOTE: Sign language interpreters will be present during this event. \nThe True Cost of Coal graphic uses mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia as a lens through which to understand the historical and contemporary story of energy and resource extraction. \nWith a gigantic portable mural teeming with intricate images of plants and animals from the most biodiverse temperate forest on the planet\, the Bees will share (and seek) stories of how mountaintop removal coal mining affect communities and ecosystems throughout Appalachia and beyond. \nLong exploited as a resource-extraction colony within the US\, the Appalachian mountains are home to a fight for survival which has determined\, in part\, the industrial power of this country. Without coal\, mined at a great cost to Appalachian communities\, there would be no ‘cheap’ electricity. Today’s energy corporations and government bodies are continuing to show the extent of their greed and short-sightedness as they push their extractive agendas in the “New Coal Rush.” We will expose the deceptions of “clean coal” technologies and bring to light the root causes of the climate chaos the planet is facing today. \nThe True Cost of Coal examines all of our connections to coal\, while celebrating stories of struggle from mountain communities. The last chapter of the story also looks to the future\, raising questions about alternatives\, remediation\, and regeneration.\n—-\nPresented by SEIU Local 2 \nVisit www.mayworkshalifax.ca for all event details.

SUMMARY:Under the Surface
DESCRIPTION:Under the Surface is a group exhibition featuring works by Kim Cain\, Tina Roberts-Jeffers and Katie Toth. \nTogether\, their works ask us to take a closer look at their subjects\, unearth the obscured and reconsider our assumptions about home. \nAdmission: FREE\n————————-\nOpening Reception\nMay 1st at 6:30pm\nfollowing the May Day rally \nFREE ice cream will be on offer at our opening reception immediately following the May Day march thanks to Dee Dee’s Ice Cream!\nSign language interpreters will be present during our opening reception.\n————————–\nVisiting Hours\nThe exhibit will remain viewable for free to anyone attending festival events at the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op.\nVisiting hours will also be held on the weekend of May 5th and 6th from noon to 5pm each day.\n—————————\nSeeds of the Seven Year Harvest\nby Kim Cain\nThrough her painting\, Cain pays homage to the arduous agricultural labour through which African Nova Scotian communities have survived despite obstacles set against them. Today’s generations of African Nova Scotians are the harvest of seeds planted long ago by tenacious and hard working ancestors. \nIn Full View\nby Tina Roberts-Jeffers\nIn Full View is a photo exhibit that explores the unpaid labour of women\, and more specifically Black women\, in and around the home. The stills and self portraits point to the work needed to sustain households.\nLabour that is often invisible is presented here in large\, oversized photos that ask viewers to think about the physical and emotional weight of people and things on women.\nIn Full View wonders aloud who and what can be set aside until tomorrow\, when the struggle demands so much of us today. \nFace Control\nby Katie Toth\nWhat makes a refugee?\nCanada is held up as a bastion of multiculturalism for many Romani people in Europe\, who say that they are subject to a kind of “face control” that prevents them from finding employment and being treated as full citizens in their current nations. National and international laws try to draw borders between refugees fleeing persecution and immigrants seeking better financial futures. But for people who are prevented from participating fully in civil society because of discrimination or who are denied a chance to find meaning through their work\, those lines aren’t so easy to draw. Material concerns are also political ones. \nUnder the Surface is presented by the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union \nVisit www.mayworkshalifax.ca for all event details.

SUMMARY:Mug
DESCRIPTION:The Mayworks Halifax Festival presents \nA New Play by In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association\nMay 6th  7pm \nMay 7th 2pm \nMay 7th 7pm \n\nMug revolves around the Mug Shots of three formerly incarcerated people – photographs that span collectively almost 50 years of being in conflict with oneself and the Justice System. When a photograph is captured we often refer to it as ‘taking’ the photograph. This process of taking is encapsulated by the taking of the mug shot. However\, when a person is convicted of committing an offence\, the process of taking involves much more. When a person is incarcerated\, the liberty of free movement is taken. The person’s clothes are taken. The ability to make many of their own decisions is taken. Through Mug\, four persons relive their past by offering their stories and invite us all to take the challenge of giving. \n Featuring performances by JRDN\n \n\nCast & Crew:\nCast: Craig Kelly\, Lance Perry\, Darren Tynes and JRDN\n\nDirected by Sobaz Benjamin\nWith assistance from: Liam Petite\, Jacob Sampson\, Michael Tennyson and Jordan Metro\n\nBiographies\n\nSobaz Benjamin\, Founder and Executive Director of In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association\, is an accomplished and recognized film-director\, as well as a community advocate\, youth mentor\, program facilitator and educator. SUMMARY:I was There
DESCRIPTION:The Mayworks Halifax Festival presents \nAn Audiovisual installation by Katie Toth and Mary-Dan Johnston\nFREE admission\n\nIt goes like this: the bank closes\, along with the grocery\, then the laundromat\, the club\, the pub\, the corner store where we bought popsicles and cartons of milk. The schools crumbled and were consolidated. Now\, standing on the same spot where I bought my first vodka cran\, underage\, there is thick gravel where years ago I felt linoleum\, softer\, sticking to the sole of my shoe.\nThe geography remains the same\, but the landscape changes\nI was there is an attempt to illuminate the psychogeography of a city that is often accused of being stuck in the past. This mixed-media installation combines photography\, oral history testimony and cartography to shed a light on what is lost in the process of gentrification.\n  \nLocation and Hours\nThis piece is presented in the lobby of The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op and can be experienced ahead or after any event presented at this location. I can also be experience between 10am and 4pm daily from May 8th to 10th. \nBiographies\nKatie Toth is an emerging audio artist and digital/audio journalist who has been published in VICE\, the Village Voice\, and NPR.
