SUMMARY:OBEY presents Joe McPhee (NY) / Andre Fenton / Hosta
DESCRIPTION:This show sits at several intersections of curiosity. Featuring legendary New York free jazz saxophonist Joe McPhee\, beloved spoken word champ Andre Fenton and the foraged-sample dronescapes of Hosta (aka Kayla Stevens). The third instalment of OBEY Convention’s off-season will open yet another portal for curious ears to catch some new ideas. \n+++ Joe McPhee +++\nhttps://joemcphee.bandcamp.com/\nhttp://joemcphee.com/ \nAt an exuberant 78 years young\, still performing\, collaborating and blowing minds on the regular\, Joe brings a wealth of spirit and depth of breath that surpasses players a quarter his age. Since his era-defining 1970 LP Nation Time\, that fuses civil rights shout-outs with cosmic out-grooves\, McPhee has been an essential player across genres\, scenes and nations. Equally at home in jazz\, soul\, noise\, punk\, improv and more\, McPhee’s soulful dedication and approach defies classification and transcends limitations. \n+++ Andre Fenton +++\nhttps://www.writers.ns.ca/members/profile/322 \nAndre Fenton is an author\, spoken word artist\, and filmmaker. He has performed and represented Halifax\, Nova Scotia at 7 national poetry festivals across Canada. He was previously a member at large on Spoken Word Canada and currently on the board of directors within the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia. He has won awards in both filmmaking and spoken word poetry and an author of two books\, Ode to Teen Angst and Worthy of Love. \n+++ Hosta +++\nhttps://hosta-hfx.bandcamp.com/ \nHosta is the solo noise/drone project of Kayla Stevens. Sounds like anti-music meets horror soundscapes. Improvisations using electronics and foraged samples. \n* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * \nTICKETING: \n$20 / PWYC / No one turned away for lack of funds\nAll Ages / FREE for anyone under 19 \nFREE with OBEY Juicy or Premium membership:\nhttp://www.obeyconvention.com/member/ \nAccessible entrance.\nAccessible\, non-gendered washrooms. \nNo hate / violence / discrimination / oppression of any kind will be tolerated. SUMMARY:OBEY presents Dreamcrusher (NYC) w/ Grief + Junk Entity
DESCRIPTION:Our second show of the season features NYC’s force-forward industrial provocateur Dreamcrusher with locals Grief and Junk Entity. Scrambling weirdo waves of noise\, punk\, techno and heavy power into a night of expressive tension. Join us as the light grows slim and the spirit needs out. \n+++ Dreamcrusher +++\nhttps://dreamcrusher.bandcamp.com\nhttps://soundcloud.com/drencrome\nhttps://www.instagram.com/drmcrshr/ \nPlaying a fringe yet stylized version of noise and industrial that is intelligent\, expressive\, and powerfully physical\, Dreamcrusher is the solo musical endeavour of multidisciplinary artist Luwayne Glass- hailing from Wichita\, Kansas. Formed in 2003\, reveling in the aughts of myspace\, tumblr\, soundcloud and other social media sites\, Dreamcrusher began as a project of self-discovery and self-release while contained in a queer\, gender non-binary (they/them pronouns\, not he/him or she/her)\, black body in America’s bible belt. Creating over thirty releases\, splits\, extended plays and singles all before 2014\, without ever releasing a full-length album\, each project shows a very individual growth while sitting in many scenes that often don’t lend themselves to explicit artistic morphing. The Dreamcrusher project and their releases have become increasingly more personal\, confrontational\, concise and challenging. After migrating from Kansas to New York City\, their success hit new heights diving headfirst into the American live DIY scene. Dreamcrusher continues to alter the overwhelmingly rigid aesthetic of ‘noise’ and underground scenes by expanding the meaning of ‘genre’\, and in many ways completely distorting ‘genre’ to form to them rather than the reverse. They choose not to underestimate the intelligence of their audience by challenging them at every sea change. \n+++ Grief +++\nhttps://grief902.bandcamp.com/releases \nRaw punk from Halifax featuring members of Frail Hands\, Wax\, Cutie\, and Nightbummerz \n+++ Junk Entity +++\nhttps://junkentity.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://soundcloud.com/user-598500493 \nJunk Entity: ear slime for the body juices \n* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * \nTICKETING: \n$20 / PWYC / No one turned away for lack of funds\nAll Ages / FREE for anyone under 19 \nFREE with OBEY Juicy or Premium membership:\nhttp://www.obeyconvention.com/member/ \nAccessible entrance.\nAccessible\, non-gendered washrooms. \nNo hate / violence / discrimination / oppression of any kind will be tolerated. SUMMARY:OBEY XI: Sarah Hennies + Melody McKiver
DESCRIPTION:++ Sarah Hennies ++\nhttp://www.obeyconvention.com/artists/sarah-hennies/\nhttp://www.sarah-hennies.com/ \nA composer and percussionist whose work utilizes an often grueling\, endurance-based performance practice\, Sarah Hennies examines psychoacoustics\, queer identity and expressionistic absurdity\, all through a subversive lense. In her internationally lauded performances\, outdated binaries dissolve: those between sound and music\, tension and release\, resistance and submission. Each of her compositions displays a kind of ferocity in dedication; a rigid conceptual underpinning that elevates the felt experience of the work to an almost preposterous degree. \n++ Melody McKiver ++\nhttp://www.obeyconvention.com/artists/melody-mckiver/\nhttps://soundcloud.com/melodymckiver/sets/reckoning-ep \nAn Anishinaabe multidisciplinary artist and arts educator\, Melody McKiver is a vital voice in the movement turning critical eyes towards the realities of colonization on Turtle Island. Currently living in Sioux Lookout on Treaty #3 territory\, McKiver is a member of Obishikokaang Lac Seul First Nation on their mother’s side and of settler Canadian Scottish-Lithuanian descent on their father’s side. Their most recent release\, 2017’s Reckoning EP\, is a deeply moving score for a theatre production of the same name. Centered around McKiver’s viola playing\, a stark\, experimental blend of Western Classical and Anishinaabe traditions\, the work explores the effects of Indian Residential Schools and the repercussions of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Their art not only raises awareness but celebrates the diversity and resilience of their own culture amongst the hundreds of Indigenous cultures that still call Turtle Island home. \n* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * \n$20 / PWYC / All Ages\nAccessible entrance. Accessible\, non-gendered washrooms \nTickets & Passes:\nhttp://www.tickethalifax.com/events/54282758/oxi-presents-sarah-hennies-melody-mckiver \nMore info: www.obeyconvention.com \n* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * \nNo one will be turned away from any OBEY events for lack of funds.
