Drum Making Workshop with Brian & Bryson Knockwood

Brian and Bryson Knockwood will lead participants through a cultural journey in the making of a traditional hand drum.

The workshop will begin with a prayer song and smudging ceremony. White sage will be used to cleans our mind, body and spirit, and to ask for good energy and guidance as we begin our drum making journey.

Throughout the workshop, participants will receive teachings about the drum, care for the drum, and about how we can learn a little bit of life’s teachings while we creating a drum – the heart beat of mother earth.

Participants will be using rims made of cedar, which is one of the 4 sacred medicines, and whitetail deer hides harvested from last year’s hunt.

Brian Knockwood proudly hails from Sipken’katik, a Mi’kmaq community located in the heart of Nova Scotia. He is one of the founding members of the Eastern Eagle Singers and has traveled from coast to coast sharing his culture and music. Brian is also practices the art of traditional hand drum making, using techniques and teachings that have been passed on to him from his elders.
