With just six performances from October 11th-14th, Matchstick Theatre proudly presents John Mighton’s The Little Years, the last production of its 2018 season, at the Bus Stop Theatre with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Theatre Nova Scotia.
John Mighton’s epic masterpiece orbits Kate, who begins the play as a young woman of 14, and follows her life from 1957 to 2002. Now in 2018, where many are still battling for equality and respect, Mighton’s drama presents a microcosm of progress to remind us that there is something to fight for, even if we ourselves don’t always reap the results of our efforts.
From the playwright: Kate possesses the makings of a gifted mathematician with an enthusiasm for exploring the mysteries of space and time. But this is the 1950s and women are routinely laughed out of scientific circles. Besides, every family has its star, and Kate’s brother already holds that distinction. Hindered by prejudices against women, Kate is confined to a life of unfulfilling jobs, leading her to become bitter and unhappy. The Little Years confronts the impact of chauvinism and explores the nature of fame, the value of art, and the passing of time.

The Little Years opens on October 11th and runs for just six performances with shows at 8:00pm on the 11th-14th and 2:00pm on the 13th and 14th. The matinee on the 13th is Pay What You Can. Run time is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with a 10 minute intermission.
